WASTE NOSTALGIA BY TIMOTHY BYRNE

Bedford TK 4x2 7.5 tonne Powell Duff ryn Dempster Dumpster 5S collection vehicle (above)

(2) 8x4 30 tonne chassis fi tted with a Reynolds Boughton Super ‘A’ 8.30 Ampliroll hook loader system.

In the 1980s, the company continued to invest in their vehicle fl eet. Volvo truck chassis started to be added, with the fi rst being a Volvo F7.27 6x4 24 tonne chassis. This was fi tted with a Powell Duff ryn Dempster Dumpmaster DB30 full pack front end loader.

Four axle 30 tonne front end loaders were also added to the fl eet: Volvo F7.31 and Volvo F7 types. The equipment mounted on to these was either the Shelvoke and Drewry Dempster XHD Series DP80-34 (34 cubic yard) unit, or the Peabody Galion EZ Pack 33-23 (33 cubic yard) unit.

Trade waste collection was also added to the services which Hemmings provided in this period. Paladin collection, using 880 litre cylindrical containers, was initially off ered and then in the mid-1980s, Eurocart two and four wheeled containers were introduced.

These were supplied by Lin Pac Environmental Products - 120- 1,100 litres for small, medium and large sized business.

The paladin containers were serviced by either a Shelvoke and Drewry day cab PNY 4x2 16 tonne 16 cubic metre Revopak trade waste collection vehicle, fi tted with pencil bin lifting equipment. Alternatively, the paladin containers would be emptied by a Dennis Delta day cab 4x2 16 tonne Hestair Eagle Phoenix (1) Series 15m3 trade waste collection vehicle, fi tted with a pencil bin lift.

The Eurocarts were serviced by either a Dennis Delta day cab 4x2 16 tonne Dennis Eagle Phoenix (1) Series 15m3 trade waste collection vehicle, or a Leyland Freighter day cab 4x2 16 tonne Dennis Eagle Phoenix (1) Series 15m3 trade waste collection vehicle.

Both vehicles were fi tted with Alpha trade waste bin lifting @SkipHireMag

1976 AEC Marshall Major 6x4 24 tonne chassis fi tted with a Powell Duff ryn Dempster Dumpmaster DB 27 cubic yard FEL

equipment, which could empty two and four wheeled Eurocart containers from 120 to 1100 litre capacities. The equipment had paladin clamp arms fi tted, so it could also empty 880 litre paladin cylindrical containers.

A hire division was set up off ering a range of vehicles for short, medium and long term hire to the private and public sector waste management companies. Vehicles off ered on the hire fl eet ranged from gully emptiers, narrow and standard width waste collection vehicles, mechanical road sweepers, chain lift type skip loaders and hook loader vehicles.

W. Hemmings provided a diverse range of waste disposal services in this era for both industry and commerce, which gave the business a platform to provide sustainable dry waste collection systems to meet the demands of the Bristol waste management market in the 1970s and 1980s.
