WASTE RECYCLING

Blue Ocean Technology make waves treating fish waste

NORWEGIAN firm Blue Ocean Technology inked a long-term agreement with water treatment solution provider Sorbwater in order to promote technology in Scotland, designed to make fi sh waste a resource.

Blue Ocean Technology and Sorbwater Technology have developed a suite of completely biodegradable solutions for industrial high-performance water treatment applications.

The deal could pave the way for on-land fi sh farm waste to become an asset.

Blue Ocean Technology chief executive, Jan Henning Legreid said: “We believe we have the most cost effi cient technology, and the greenest.

“Our aim is the global market with a focus on Norway, Scotland and the Faroe Islands fi rst, for geographical reasons. It is also an advantage for us that the environmental conscience in Scotland is well developed.”

Through using the Sorbwater technology,

utilising natural alginates, total particle emissions from aquaculture facilities are signifi cantly reduced.

A version of the system is already used at Marine Harvest’s Kvingo hatchery in Norway, where the more effi cient waste disposal means it releases clean water into the sea, and has enabled regulators to increase the amount of feed the hatchery is allowed to use to 850 tonnes per year.

Plates capture sludge

Floating solids in waste water are captured by Sorbwater’s green fl occulation chemical – Sorbfl oc – and other fi lters. The waste water is fi ltered and then through a special type of dried peat moss imported from Canada.

Jan added: “Aquaculture and fi sh farming are increasingly vital industries for Norway, indeed the world, moving forward. We are extremely happy to be working with Sorbwater Technology in such an exciting area.

DUNDEE and Angus have awarded a contract for over 25 years to German Energy company MVV through their British subsidiary MVV Environment Baldovie Ltd, which has now been awarded a third project in the UK.

At the end of November 2017, MVV took over an existing energy from waste plant in Dundee. Now MVV will now invest €135 million in total to build a new combined heat and power (CHP) facility and operate it for 25 years.

The new facility will have an annual throughput of 110,000 tonnes of residual waste. The majority of this will come directly from Dundee City and Angus councils, while commercial and

industrial waste sourced by MVV will make up the difference.

With an overall effi ciency rate of up to 55%, the plant will produce up to 9 MW electricity and 17 MW heat.

The heating energy will be supplied as process steam to a neighbouring industrial customer.

Sales of €4 billion

“Drawing on decades of experience and our broad-based expertise, in recent years we have developed energy from waste into a paradigm of sustainability and of local and regional climate protection”, said MVV’s CEO, Dr. Georg Müller.

MVV also operate an Energy from Waste CHP facility in Plymouth, and a

biomass facility at Ridham Docks near Sittingbourne (Kent).

MVV Environment is an English company and part of German utility company MVV, whose headquarters are in Mannheim.

With around 6,100 employees and sales of €4 billion, MVV is one of Germany‘s leading energy companies.

MVV provides fl exible solutions for waste disposal, producing environmentally sustainable energy.

In Germany, MVV operates five Energy from Waste and biomass facilities, managing 1.6 million tonnes of waste a year. With over 50 years’ experience, MVV is one of the top companies in Germany in its field.
