Continuing Competence Tests are key aspects of the industry

THE public increasingly recognises the crucial role waste and resource professionals play in ensuring 202.8million tonnes of waste – generated every year (UK Statistics December 2016) – can be treated, reused and recycled effi ciently, and eff ectively.

The CIWM/WAMITAB Continuing Competence Test is designed to ensure the technically competent person on a permitted waste site has the knowledge and skills that keep pace with changes made across the waste management industry, for example: new legislation, technologies and techniques.

In England and Wales, a technically competent person is required to pass an assessment every two years, to demonstrate they have kept their competence up to date; this has now been extended to Northern Ireland, but it remains a voluntary process in Scotland.

Book the test

The CIWM/WAMITAB Continuing Competence scheme is delivered through by Pearson Vue. You will need a valid credit or debit card to book the test, either by telephone 0161 855 7316 or online pearsonvue.com/WAMITAB.

Each test costs £135, and you can take three Activity Specifi c Tests at one time. You select the location, date and time of your test and you can book up to three months in advance.

You only book the generic section of the test at this stage, but on the day of the test you will need to select the relevant Activity Specifi c Test(s). This depends on the area of competence you need to achieve – for guidance contact your local environmental regulators, or check our WAMITAB website.

Preparing for the test

Make sure you start to revise for your test well in advance. When revising, you should make sure to:

•Spend enough time – but remember R •Use your full concentration

shorter study sessions work better, as you are more likely to remember what has been learned

evise in a way that works for you! Try the following: ••Making a mind-mapping diagram

Record yourself reading out revision

notes, and then listen back to what you have said on the recording

Make bullet points on crib cards to carry around with you

AMITAB have developed a series of Revision Guides to support preparation for the Continuing Competence test, by linking the learning outcomes with the areas that may be covered in the test. These are available to buy, and there are free Revision Summaries that can be downloaded.

On the day of the test

It is best to arrive at the test centre 20 minutes before your scheduled time slot to allow time to complete the sign-in procedures. Be prepared to show a valid form of identifi cation that contains both a photo and a signature, so bring either a photo driving licence, or passport.

When you start the test, you will see an option screen from which you select your Activity Specifi c Test – you can take up to three, but only select the test(s) you need for your waste site.

Candidates need to correctly answer 50% or more questions in the Generic Knowledge Test section, and 50% or more questions in each Activity Specific Test – these scores are combined to give your overall result. You will need a further four marks from either test to achieve the pass mark of 65%.

The Generic Knowledge Test and the Activity Specifi c Test cannot be passed and certifi cated on their own (unless the Generic Knowledge Test is the only part required by the environmental regulator).

Scores are calculated separately for each Activity Specifi c Test.

It is possible to pass one and fail the other, which means you would be awarded one Continuing Competence certifi cate, and then have to book and retake the Generic Knowledge Test and the option you failed.

After the test

You will receive a Score Report at the test centre, which gives you a breakdown of your results, with guidance on the back to show it is calculated.

In addition you can check your results on the Continuing Competence Test Score Calculator, which is featured on our new website. Here you simply type in your scores, and the pass/fail is calculated automatically.

This is not an ‘offi cial’ result, but it is a handy check for candidates while they await a communication from WAMITAB to confi rm their own result.

Good luck if you are one of the over 2000 people that are due to take their test before April. Remember, be prepared!
