Wood Energy: does biomass stack up without Renewable Heat Incentives?

IT IS hardly surprising some customers have got cold feet at the prospect of spending £1million plus on a biomass machine, when they may not be eligible to receive Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments.

But does the RHI actually matter when the business model clearly stacks up without it? The biomass industry has been poised for some time regarding a decision on the eligibility of drying SRF/ RDF and now it has it.

On the 30th Jan 2017, the Renewable Energy Association released a statement giving clear and fi nal guidance of ‘what is’ and ‘what is not’ acceptable and the cleaning, processing and drying of waste of any kind is not acceptable under the new RHI rules. A copy can be downloaded here: www.woodenergy.com/news

The business model stacks up without RHI

Let’s be clear, the drying of RDF/SRF is certainly a good thing. It not only reduces the weight (thus saving on gate fees and transport costs), it also improves the calorific value making the product much better for incineration, while avoiding the irresponsible possibility of landfill – win-win!

Calculations show drying the RDF/SRF from 35% to 15% (using your own B/C grade wood fuel) is justification alone for installing a WID/IED compliant biomass system.

The RHI ought to be considered as ‘nice to have’, but the business model stacks up event without it – as shown right.

As a leading company with years of experience in the sector, Wood Energy are the first port of call for biomass.
