SPOTLIGHT ON SCOTLAND

Timberpak team up with Matpro expertise

OVER the past year, Timberpak, a subsidiary of EGGER (UK) Limited, has introduced a range of investments to improve operations at its Scottish site, in Bellshill.

The company operates its own fl eet of vehicles across its UK sites, primarily using hook loaders and at Timberpak Scotland it operates a fl eet of artic trucks with trailers.

To service its Scottish customer base, 110 and 120 cubic yard trailers are used. However, in 2017, two 129 cubic yard Legras walking fl oor trailers were added.

EGGER Timberpak Scotland Operations Manager Gordon Argo said: “As well as the additional capacity we have gained, our new trailers are a perfect fi t for the wide range of environments and conditions they will experience.”

To improve material fl ow on the site and increase throughput, a new Haas Tyron 2500 slow speed shredder was purchased from UK distributors, MATPRO MACHINERY LTD.

This led to the investment of a new picking station in early 2017 to further improve the quality of the recycled material produced.

A further benefi t was the increased speed and volume of recycled material extracted, as well as greater effi ciencies in removing MDF, general waste and non-ferrous metals (done by hand) and ferrous metal (by a magnet).

Gordon added: “After our previous shredder had run its course, we required a trustworthy replacement which could more than handle the fairly high tonnages we get through on a daily basis. “It was also a crucial requirement the new shredder creates uniform and downsized material.”

Ben McQuaid, Director at Matpro Machinery Ltd commented:

SCOT Heating & Power, situated just outside Edinburgh, sees 2018 as a year of sustained growth after the issues with the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI).

The last few years have been challenging in the marketplace, as competition for the small and medium boiler installations has been fi erce and driven by the RHI. However, in spite of the competition, Scot Heating Company managed to double turnover.

Scot Heating Company General Manager, Andy Wiseman said: “Over recent years, we have seen competition and prices for virgin biomass increase signifi cantly.

MIL-TEK Scotland is a leading supplier of balers and compactor equipment to Scottish businesses. Mil-tek’s balers range from 20kg producers through to the company’s 60T mill size machines.

“We are again delighted to satisfy another longstanding customer, and receive more positive feedback concerning the Haas brand.

“The Haas 2500 really is the perfect fi t for a substantial waste wood processing business such as Timberpak, and we are more than happy to see they are starting to witness both the functional and operational benefi ts in such a short space of time.”

The previous shredder’s magnet belts sometimes blocked the larger material created post-shredding – an issue that has now been solved with the 2500, to allow maximum throughput.

The company continues to build a reliable fleet of units and trailers, allowing it to increase collections from customers and deliver more recycled fibre to their parent company EGGER

“The availability and cost of waste wood is likely to change, so having access to technology that can legally combust low quality biomass fuels, waste fuels and blends going forward is a signifi cant advantage for us.”

In addition, the company is a UK distributor for Electratherm ORC electrical generators, which are able to produce electricity from waste or low temperature heat sources.

Mil-tek off er solutions to ensure companies beat the downturn manufacturing process – and investing in labour saving equipment.

Stewart McKenzie, Mil-tek Managing Director says 2018 will bring many challenges for the entire recycling industry, with particular emphasis to tackle downturn in the rebates for both KLS (cardboard) and plastic in order to stop companies being put off by investing in recycling.

At the same time, many larger companies are embracing LEAN productivity – relentlessly work on eliminating waste from the

Stewart has concerns about the ‘waste iceberg’ - where many concentrate on the obvious, for example, the actual waste cost on a Profi t and Loss Statement when the biggest savings are unseen.
