BRIGHTON businessman Neil Masey, 54, owner of zero-waste fi rm Mr. Masey’s Beard Emporium, believes councils need to show more common sense.
His request comes after he had to pay a £300 fi ne this year after placing ONE cardboard box and single bottle into a Brighton bin, WRITES SAMUEL McKEOWN.
Neil was fi ned in November after an enforcement offi cer fi shed into the bins and found his company’s logos printed on recyclate items.
Neil said: “I reuse all my waste for UK and abroad deliveries, to the point where I only need to recycle one large cardboard box a week and a fi ve-litre plastic drum every fortnight.

“So every four or fi ve weeks, for the past four years, I have been taking these materials to the local tip and putting them in the correct bins. On this occasion I was too late for the tip, so I went to the council’s recycling units.
“I put the box and bottle – labelled with my company logo and details – in those bins, but they

were fi shed out by an enforcement offi cer. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong – so I didn’t remove my labels or identifi cation. It’s not like I dumped a fridge on a beach - I’ve recycled a piece of cardboard responsibly."
Regulations state commercial waste should be dealt with through a waste management scheme, which Neil was told would cost £380 a year, or £4.60 per cardboard box to recycle.
