NIGHT SAFARIUKUMARÍ’S

What is Ukumarí? The Ukumarí Biopark, located in the Colombian city of Pereira in the so-called “Eje Cafetero” (Coffee Axis), has become an ideal space to admire fauna and flora, as well as to create awareness among visitors about caring for nature.


The brainchild of the Pereira Flora and Fauna Theme Park


was born in the late nineties. At that time Pereira, capital of the department of Risaralda, located in the Cultural Coffee Landscape (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) had a zoo, Matecaña, in which animals had only limited spaces in which to live. Local authorities and representatives of the national


government then decided to develop a megaproject, under the concept of ‘bioparque’, that would improve the quality

of life of the species, take advantage of the biodiversity of the region and boost the tourism offer of the coffee region, in which the most important theme parks in the country were located. After more than fifteen years of work in charge of a large multidisciplinary team, in 2015 Ukumarí began the pre- operation stage (see Park World, May 2015 issue) with the support of the Mayor’s office of Pereira and the central government via the Tourism Promotion Fund (FONTUR), which has since invested more than 18 million dollars. The name was chosen by the local community, and


approximately 17,000 people, most of them young, submitted proposals. Finally ‘Ukumarí’ was chosen, meaning ‘that which has the force of the Bear’ in Quechua language. Ukumarí’s total design is expected to operate seven
