Better prospects in Brazil
Brazil has always been, together with Mexico, a leader in the amusement and park industry in Latin America. However, since 2016 the industry has suffered the consequences of the country's economic difficulties and the high taxes that prevented it from making investments in replacement of equipment and the opening of new entertainment spaces. As 2019 begins, there seems to be a more positive
trend. This is demonstrated by the new projects carried out at the end of 2018 and those planned for this year. Astrid González Nariño reports.
TARIFF EXEMPTIONS The Brazilian parks are taking advantage of the temporary tax exemption decreed some months ago in that country for the importation of capital goods, IT and telecommunications that they do not produce locally. Figures revealed by the Ministry of Industry, Foreign
Trade and Services of Brazil indicate that in the second half of 2018, employers registered requests for equipment purchases worth an estimated US$ 4 million. According to the president of the Integrated System of
Parks and Tourist Attractions (Sindepat), Alain Baldacci, this phenomenon is justified by being "a sector that needs to constantly renew its attractions" and that is related to high-tech resources. Some specialists consider that these investments will
represent the creation of at least 600 new jobs in theme parks.
The Minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services of
Brazil, Vinicius Lummertz, in this regard told the media "with the framing of these goods in the ex-tariff category, investments are returning. We have much to celebrate". He added that the volume of orders and the projected amount of investments shows the optimism and vigor of the sector.
