62,000 Halloween fans stormed the Familypark in 2018. For the first time, the horror spectacle took place in Austria's largest amusement park on 10 days and it was promptly rewarded with a new visitor record. Thanks to the record number of visitors, it was also possible to set new records in the catering industry: for example, around 2100 portions of the witch broth were drawn from the kettles. More than 12,000 portions of French fries (3 tons) were sold and over 10,000 Häferl punch of all sorts drunk. From the classic Langos 4,000 pieces were issued. Also popular were small treats such as chestnuts, of which 400 kg were roasted, and 1,400 bars of cotton candy, which were filmed.

What caught your eye at IAAPA/last season's trade shows?


Coen Bertens, Efteling: I've noticed that IAAPA shows are really growing in attendance and that they are becoming more and more valuable for networking and meetings. I see this as a real positive because I think that it is very important for the future that we learn from each other. Of course last September, when many IAAPA members were in Holland, it was particularly good to meet colleagues.


Michael Mack, Europa-Park: It was really noticeable at the trade shows this season that media based attractions seem no longer to be something only for parks like Disney, Universal or Europa-Park. There are more and more affordable and compact media based ride systems, which really create an amazing immersive experience.


Anthony Catanoso, Steel Pier: Some food and beverage items caught our eye, since we’re looking for ideas on how to improve our business. Our food and beverage sales were up sharply in 2018 and we’re now looking to enhance it even more. We’re also looking for a major new attraction for 2020.


Rick Knoebel, Knoebel’s Amusement Resort: I liked the younger kid’s version of the Ropes Courses. We have a playground at the park, and the Ropes Course doesn’t require a lot of staff.

The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) held its festive day out on Thursday 13 December. The day kicked off with a networking lunch at London escape rooms, ClueQuest, where guests took part in escape games before heading off for cocktails and onto Winter Wonderland.


The Park World Excellence Awards will open for entry at the beginning of February. launched in 2018 by Datateam Business Media in association with Park World magazine, the Park World Excellence Awards has been cited as ‘an awards scheme with a difference’. The ceremony will take place in Paris on 18 September.
