MARKET REPORT: ASIA PACIFIC Domestic IP brands are successfully finding their way into theme


parks. Fantawild created the Boonie Bears characters which has become a successful television, movie and brands license. The Boonie Bears are now showing up in their theme parks in new attractions and merchandise. Other theme parks are creating their own domestic characters to capture the imaginations of guests visiting their theme parks.


Outlook: cautious optimism


Local and provincial governments have positive policy initiatives for the development of theme parks in China. Theme parks are seen as facilitators in developing the cultural and tourism industry of a city or destination. However, attitudes can change very quickly in China if top-level national decisions/directions are made. Local and provincial government leaders listen carefully to, and adopt, new directions from national leaders.


China is going through a major restructuring in project financing to become more transparent and open. The financing for theme park projects is always a challenge, and as China changes its focus from economic growth at any cost to smart growth, it will be interesting to understand how theme park financing maybe affected. The quality of experience and quality of operations will be critical to the long- term success of the industry.
