In the pipeline Investments in new theme park attractions are on the increase in Asia with international interest and domestic developments. In China, Universal Studios Beijing and Nickelodeon Foshan, in Guangdong province, are both slated to open in 2020. Shanghai Disney Resort will open its seventh themed land, Toy Story Land, this year. Six Flags Zhejiang and Six Flags Chongqing are under development, and Six Flags has announced the addition of three more parks to be built in China: Six Flags Kids World, designed especially for families with young children and an all-new adventure park concept, offering high-energy outdoor thrills. These new properties are expected to open by 2020. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong Disneyland announced a US$1.1
billion investment in new lands and attractions to be phased from 2018 to 2022. 20th Century Fox World Malaysia is slated to open by the end of 2018 or 2019. Universal Studios Japan had a ground breaking for their new US$0.6 billion Nintendo Land expected to open by 2020, and Tokyo Disney Resort announced a major US$2.7 billion investment program to open by 2023. Domestic theme park developers, meanwhile, continue to expand
with strong levels of investment. Haichang Ocean World in Shanghai is expected to open in 2018. While relatively small in size it is expected to have a full range of attractions and set a new higher standard for Haichang theme parks.
Chimelong continues to expand its existing resorts with a new mega hotel opening in their Panyu resort. A large wild animal park is under construction in Zhuhai, and Chimelong is also building an entire new resort in the Qingyung area of Guangdong Province (about 45 minutes north of Guangzhou) with a forest theme. The theme park investment alone is reported at US$1.5 billion and expected to open end of 2019. As part of a larger deleveraging strategy, The Wanda Group sold a portfolio of 13 theme park projects to Sunac China Holdings in mid 2017.
