MARKET REPORT: LATIN AMERICA

According to those same sources, Beto Carrero World is the largest multi-thematic park in the world. It has a total area of 14 thousand square meters, which places it as the largest amusement park in Brazil and Latin America. In 2017, it brought more than 2.1 million visitors to Santa Catarina. Additionally, it is estimated that more than 60 percent of Penha's economically active population (some 8,000 people) depend on its operation.

The park also develops numerous social, community and cultural activities in the municipality of Penha, as well as investing in the facilities of firemen, military and civil police and activities related to education and health.

However, the president of Beto Carrero, Rogério Siqueira, is confident that the management of Brazil's new tourism minister, Vinícius Lummertz, will continue to encourage the industry like the former minister, Marx Beltrão, who led the exemption from equipment import taxes.

In general, the future of amusement parks in Brazil is heading towards the generation of projects in Family Entertainment Centers (FEC), associated with the operation of shopping centres, as well as the expansion of itinerant, or semi-permanent parks, to reduce the costs that are implicit with a permanent location.

COLOMBIA

Colombia continues to occupy one of the top three places in the ranking of amusement parks in Latin America, despite the fact that 2017 was not a good year for the parks of the country, according to the executive director of ACOLAP (Colombian Attractions and Amusement Parks Association), Ángela Díaz. The causes are attributed to an economic slowdown from which the country is still recovering, as a result of high inflation, high interest rates and the latest tax reform that raised the value- added tax (VAT) from 16 to 19 percent.

Díaz noted that amusement parks were not unaffected by the fall in consumption in 2017 and that, by analyzing the behavior of the sector, it could be established that the negative impact on income and the number of visitors began approximately two years ago.

Blue Park, Brazil

This was verified, added Díaz, after a preliminary balance of the 2017 figures and the consultations of the union to its associates. It was concluded that the industry decreased between 7 and 10 percent last year.

Despite this situation, some of the different parks in the country have opted to invest in improvements and attractions to not only strengthen their offer but to stimulate the number of visitors, revenues and profitability.

The marketing director of Corparques - Parque Mundo Aventura, in Bogota, Gimena Rodríguez, revealed that the company has invested around $2,200 million in a new roller coaster that was inaugurated a few weeks ago. The new attraction aims to cope with the low they suffered in the last two years, improving the park services. Their expectation is to increase the number of visitors by seven percent, compared to 2017. "This 2018 has undoubtedly been much better than previous periods. We have begun to show important growths, especially in the holiday season that just happened. This left us with a 40% growth in visitors and revenues," said Rodríguez. The general manager of the Coffee Park, Pedro Nel Salazar, meanwhile, also agreed that the past year had been difficult for the Colombian economy and stated that when this type of deceleration occurs, people stop using products and services that are not within basic needs, such as entertainment. According to the manager, families tend to sacrifice outings to movies and amusement parks visits to cover priority expenses. "In general terms, it was a difficult year that was intensified by one of the strongest winters in the last 15 years in the Coffee Region," said Salazar.

In 2017, the Coffee Park presented a decrease in its revenues compared to 2016 of 7 per cent. However, he considered that the projections indicate that there will be an improvement in the climatic and economic conditions of the country. Salazar expects a growth of 15 per cent to compensate the fall of the previous period and obtain profits at the end of 2018. The Coffee Park recently put into operation a new roller coaster in which more than USD $6 million was invested and announced another attraction for 2018 that will cost approximately USD $ 2.5 million.
