MACAU BUSINESS
Suspicious transactions in casinos rise 8.7 per cent in H1 T E
he number of suspicious transactions recorded in Macau casinos rose by 8.7 per cent in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2025, according to official data.
The Financial Intelligence Office (GIF) stated that the six gaming operators in the region submitted a total of 2,018 suspicious transaction reports related to money laundering or terrorist financing.
According to statistics released on Tuesday, the GIF pointed to “the increase in the number of reports submitted by the gaming sector” as the main reason for a 9.5 per cent rise in the total number of suspicious transactions. Between January and June, the office received 2,753 reports, with 73.3 per cent originating from casino concessionaires, 19.1 per cent from banks and insurance companies, and 7.6 per cent from other institutions and entities.
STDM’s Estoril Sol posts €25.3 million loss in 2025
storil Sol, Portugal’s leading casino operator majority-owned by Macau’s STDM, has posted a loss of €25.3 million (MOP 233.5 million) in 2025, according to newly released results. The company has finally presented its accounts for 2025 following three postponements. Estoril Sol’s parent company, STDM, is also the majority shareholder of Macau gaming concessionaire SJM. Estoril Sol runs two casinos in Portugal, one in Estoril and another in Lisbon. Until this year, the group also operated Casino Póvoa in northern Portugal through its subsidiary, Varzim Sol. However, the company chose not to submit a proposal before the 29 December public tender deadline.
The end of the concession for the third casino, in Póvoa de Varzim, was precisely one of the primary reasons for the delay in presenting the 2025 accounts, as the company allocated
an extraordinary provision of
approximately MOP 166 million created in 2025 to support the reorganization resulting from the exit from Póvoa de Varzim.
In a separate development, Portugal’s Supreme Administrative Court upheld a ruling requiring the company to pay the State €36.9 million (MOP 341.5 million), an amount stemming from a complex corporate restructuring process carried out several years ago.
