A team from Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) led by Board Chair Ken Kitariko and CEO Denis Mudene, took part in the 16th Gaming Regulators Africa Forum (GRAF) Conference, held recently in Sun City, South Africa. The annual gathering brings together regulators, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and experts from across the continent to discuss new developments, challenges, and regulatory innovations shaping Africa’s gaming landscape.
This year’s event focused on the theme: “Strengthening Gambling Regulation in Africa: Collaborative Action Against Gambling Harm and Promotion of Responsible Play in a Tech-Driven Era.” During the conference, the NLGRB delegation contributed to conversations on improving cooperation between African regulators, boosting consumer protection, addressing gambling-related harm, and using technology to strengthen monitoring and compliance. Key topics included standardising regulations across borders, advancing responsible gambling programmes, anti-money laundering measures, balancing revenue generation with player welfare, and understanding how technological change impacts regulation.
GRAF President Mabutho Zwane emphasized the importance of unified regulatory efforts, noting that Africa’s gaming industry can only thrive responsibly when countries work together and prioritise player protection.
The NLGRB highlighted Uganda’s progress in updating its regulatory systems, digitalising compliance processes, and expanding responsible gambling initiatives. Because many Ugandan operators work across multiple African markets, cross-border collaboration remains essential.
