Former Executive Director of the European Casino Association and current Managing Director of Time & Place Consulting, Glenn Cezanne provides the latest info on what’s trending and what’s coming down the pipeline in Brussels and around the EU.

S Glenn Cezanne 32 SEPTEMBER 2019

ummer has ended and typical Brussels weather is back. I have had several discussions whether Scottish weather is worse in Autumn and it has always been a close call. The traffic here in Brussels

reflects the seasonal mood and the speed of cars can be compared to that of falling leaves. OK, enough looking out the office window. Let’s look at some key issues waiting for us in the coming months.

The new European Commission

With the new European Commission ideally taking office on 1st November, it will be interesting to see which Commissioners will be dealing with gambling, anti-money laundering, data protection, competition law; to name just a few. It is not only the Commissioners themselves that will be interesting to observe but also how the individual

Commission services (known as Directorate Generals) will be structured. I don’t think I need to tell you about the impact on decision-making processes when it comes to organisational structuring. I would like to emphasise though that the political sphere relevant to the appointment of the Commissioners, can have a significant top- down impact on not only policy priorities, but policy approach. So, here is a timeline to get your bearings on what is going to happen:

• On 16th July Ursula von der Leyen, not

Germany’s most liked politician and former Defence Minister was elected as the new President of the EU Commission. Remember I warned you about the unexpected turn in the procedures to get a new head of Commission whereby the Spitzenkandidat system was pretty much undermined?
