Hot weather safety for signage professionals


Hot weather remains one of the most underestimated hazards in our sector, and with installation teams working in exposed conditions, the risks of heat-related illness on signage sites are both real and foreseeable. The British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) has set out what signage professionals need to know.

he physical demands of the work-handling materials, working at height,


operating in direct sunlight, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) – combine with elevated temperatures to create conditions that can rapidly become dangerous. The risks faced by a team completing


an internal retail installation differ significantly from those working on an exposed rooftop, a roadside scheme in direct sun, or a facade project during peak summer heat. Signage professionals must therefore


assess environmental conditions, plan working hours carefully, and implement proportionate controls before work begins.


The legal framework The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a general duty on employers to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their operatives. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments and implement appropriate controls for all foreseeable risks, including those posed by hot weather. The Workplace (Health, Safety and


Welfare) Regulations require employers to provide a reasonable temperature in the workplace. Whille there is no statutory maximum working temperature, the absence of a ceiling figure does not reduce the employer’s duty of care. Where work is carried out on construction sites, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations additionally require reasonable temperatures in indoor areas and adequate protection from adverse weather on outdoor sites, including appropriate rest facilities. Employers are also required to consult with operatives or their representatives

on the best ways to manage temperature risks. This is not merely advisory – operative engagement is a legal expectation under the Management Regulations and forms part of a credible, auditable approach to risk management.


PPE and heat: A specific consideration for signage operatives PPE is a routine requirement on signage installations, and its interaction with heat is a specific risk that deserves explicit attention. The HSE confirms that PPE reduces the body’s ability to evaporate sweat. Heavy or poorly fitted PPE increases body heat further, raising the risk of heat stress even at temperatures that might otherwise seem manageable. Where PPE must be worn in hot


conditions, employers should allow slower work rates, rotate staff out of the environment more frequently, allow longer recovery periods, and provide facilities for PPE to be dried between uses. Operatives must not attempt to compensate by undoing fasteners or removing PPE in ways that compromise the protection it provides. The question to ask in every case is whether the same level of protection can be achieved with lighter or less restrictive equipment.


Acclimatisation and training Operatives new to hot conditions, or returning after a period away from site, should be given time to acclimatise before being expected to work at full pace in high temperatures. In practice, this might mean a phased return to full hours for someone back from leave during a heatwave, pairing a new starter with an experienced operative during their first days on an exposed site, or reducing workload during the first two or three days of a sudden temperature rise. Training should cover the risks of heat


stress specific to the work environment, the symptoms to look out for, safe working practices, and emergency procedures. This is particularly important for new and young operatives, who may be less aware of the cumulative nature of heat exposure.


Documentation and RAMS Hot weather risk management must be embedded within Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). A Hot Weather Addendum – reviewed and signed off before work begins on days where temperatures are forecast to exceed 24°C, or where a Met Office heat alert has been issued – provides a structured framework for identifying and mitigating site-specific risks. This should document the briefing of all operatives at the start of each shift, confirm water and shade provision, address PPE considerations, and record any heat-related incidents for future review. The HSE also advises the use of


its published heat stress checklist as a practical tool for assessing and controlling risk. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records supports future planning, demonstrates due diligence to clients and regulators, and contributes to a stronger safety culture across the sector. Weather forecasting tools, including the Met Office website (www. metoffice.gov.uk), should be consulted routinely when outdoor or exposed installation work is planned. protects operatives, the project, and end users. Achieving this requires structured planning, careful preparation, active monitoring, and clear documentation at every stage. By following these principles, signage professionals can minimise risk, demonstrate due diligence, and deliver installations that are safe, fit for purpose, and fully compliant.
