RedSky Bikes may only be 18 months old, but the business is already making waves across North Yorkshire. BikeBiz catches up with co-founder Gemma Thompson
Can you give us a little background on RedSky Bikes? Myself and James [Gilbert] were looking for a career change in 2021, I had worked at Asda for over 13 years as a project manager then as a farm office manager for several years but always wanted to work for myself again. James had his own business for over 20 years erecting farm buildings but was finding the physical side of his work was taking its toll on him and wanted a change. We are both outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of hobbies between us: kitesurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, biking, motorbiking to name a few. James was getting really frustrated with poor customer service from bike shops and

as both of us have a natural passion for top class customer service, always of the belief that it costs nothing but means the world to a customer if they are treated right and forges long lasting relationships. James decided that we could put both of our skills together to open a bike shop. We were so lucky that Stuart Rider just so happened to be relocating to Thirsk with his partner’s job as we were advertising for a mechanic to run the workshop. He has over 30 years experience in the trade and had been running his own business, Riders Cycle Center for the past 10 years in Skipton. Stuart has been a massive part of our RedSky Bikes journey and now with Marcus onboard, who joined us from Yorkshire Cycle Hub, the team is complete.
