Companies have a
responsibility towards their staff, and changes in culture need to come from the top down. It’s up to management to lead by example at events. If staff members see a senior manager drinking to excess, behaving inappropriately, or pressuring others to drink, it sends a message that this is part of the company’s workplace culture. This can make staff members feel unsafe or pressured to drink, and it can even encourage certain individuals to behave in an
unprofessional manner when upper management are seen to be permissive of misconduct when alcohol is involved. This can be addressed by
setting internal guidelines and expectations when it comes to events, making a point of communicating these when events are coming up, and encouraging management to take responsibility for the wider team by demonstrating appropriate behaviour at all times. Finally, organisers can play
a huge role in championing change by considering the planning, policies, and format of their events and exploring the associated risk factors. This starts with taking tangible actions to mitigate risks and address the comfort and safety of everyone involved in their events. Safe In Our World and mental

health non-profit, Take This, recently collaborated to create an Event Safety Standards Guide. This free resource aims to provide concrete guidance to individuals in the games industry with the objective of creating and running safer, more inclusive events. We have consulted extensively with members of the games industry and advocacy groups to provide organisers with a range of resources that they can use to ensure safety and mitigate risks at their events. You can read or download the guide from

Safety and well-being within the games industry is
something we feel passionately about here at Safe In Our World, and we are committed to a future where industry events are enjoyable and approachable for all. With a little effort from all of us, we can shift the focus away from alcohol consumption to foster more inclusive environments and reaffirm what events are about in the first place: connecting with our peers, sharing innovation and achievements, and coming together as part of an industry worth celebrating.
