Q.

Are mods that enable commercially-available flatscreen games to be playable on XR hardware a help or a hindrance?

Henry Stockdale: A help. A large majority of developers are not supporting VR for various reasons - some games simply aren’t a good  considered if it’d work and others might not  support, I don’t consider it a hindrance.

Bobby Thandi: Mods can be a double- edged sword. On one hand, they open up new possibilities for gamers who want  games in VR. However, while these mods are impressive, they don’t compare to VR experiences built from the ground up. This can lead to mixed outcomes: they expand the market and showcase VR’s potential, but they might also leave players unaware of the depth and robustness of fully-developed VR games.

“I am all for making games playable in whatever way players want to experience them - as long as the quality is there” Jörg Tittel, RapidEyeMovers

Paul Brady: The team at Resolution Games has been developing games for a long time across every platform from Commodore 64 to mobile to PC and XR, and developing games   VR game and take it to PC and console, and    games playable on XR hardware would be great, but it’s a very tricky thing to do so it feels native and like a compelling experience.  proper resources to be executed well.

Hilmar Veigar Pétursson: Mods have always been a vital part of the PC gaming ecosystem and they serve an important role in VR too. They allow players to experience beloved games in a new way and showcase the potential of the technology. Some of the most

popular VR experiences started as mods. However, I believe the real future of VR gaming lies in native experiences designed to take full advantage of the medium’s unique strengths. The sense of immersion and presence in made-for-VR titles is unparalleled.

Jörg Tittel: Mods are an interesting concept and beautifully enhance some titles - and it doesn’t necessarily mean you suddenly have to jump across your living room to perform parcours in Mirror’s Edge VR (has anyone  Thumper for instance - its VR version retained the 3rd person perspective but the game gains so much in intensity when played inside a headset. Patrick O’Luanaigh: It shows the demand for VR gaming and that players want to experience their favourite titles in a more  players a fun experience, those who know what a genuine made-for-VR experience can  rival something truly built and tailored for VR. This is what we’re focused on creating and what we’re really excited by.

I’d say MOST of them help the XR space to grow and gain exposure, particularly mods like the Half- Life 2 VR conversion which plays exactly like 
