The ability for players to use their real worlds as a part of their gameplay experience and their own hands as controls just bring the immersion level one step further.

Jörg Tittel: I personally am the most excited about our hands and bodies - rather than controllers, becoming our input method, which opens games up to a whole new audience. The Nintendo Wii crossed over to “non gamer” audiences unlike any other console after it - Wii Sports sold dozens of millions of copies and was played by people

Which games or mods (released over the last 12 months) have impressed you the most and why?

Asgard’s Wrath 2 is currently free to download for Quest 3 buyers

Bobby Thandi: On the Meta Quest 3, Asgard’s Wrath 2 has impressed me the most.

“I truly didn’t think a game of that scale and complexity could exist on a standalone VR headset”

Ben Clements, aka Beardo Benjo 22 | MCV/DEVELOP June/July 2024

Ben Clements: I truly didn’t think a game of that scale and complexity could exist and run solely on a standalone VR headset. The fact that we can play this 100+ hour, open world, action RPG is absolutely mind boggling to me and it was a reassuring step in the right direction for standalone content. The platform has a reputation for vapid, short and scaled down experiences so something like this existing on Quest is a big statement about the level of quality that can be achieved on this hardware, let alone what the potential might be for Quest 4, 5 and beyond.

Henry Stockdale: Asgard’s Wrath 2 remains a huge accomplishment for delivering such

a hefty RPG on standalone hardware. That said, Assassin’s Creed Nexus is my personal favourite with its excellent campaign and the most comprehensive comfort settings I’ve ever seen in VR.

Paul Brady: I would say Ghosts of Tabor for its simulation-like gameplay and next level customization when it comes to VR. I also can’t get enough of our own Racket Club as  for me that I never thought could be possible in such a compelling way.

Jörg Tittel: I’m sorry to plug my own game, but I can’t believe that I still play C-Smash VRS every other day. I continue being thrilled by what amazing new features and fun our partners at Wolf & Wood and a host of

in retirement homes - and sadly the Wii U’s failure made even Nintendo retreat into more standardised input methods (most people play Switch with the JoyCons attached).  much interchangeable controllers and control schemes, on which gun-triggers are the dominant input method. It’s become so standardised that playing most games (especially AAA titles) might as well require a driver’s licence. It took VR (and hits like Beat Saber) to connect our bodies to games again, returning us to our arcade roots of immediate, physical and shareable experiences for all ages. AVP has ditched the controller entirely, forcing developers to make our eyes and bodies the controller. I  space again, reinvigorating and unlocking creativity across the whole gaming spectrum. That said, I hope Nintendo’s next console will embrace this return to physical, embodied gaming.
