Summary A defining characteristic of medical professionalism is prioritizing patient


well-being over personal interests, and physicians frequently argue that their intrinsic professionalism ensures ethical conduct. Yet economic interests and unintentional biases can introduce conflicts of interest (COIs) for physicians. Ironically, an overinflated sense of professionalism can fuel their unethical behavior and increase their susceptibility to COIs, without their knowing or intending it. Te concept and practices of “deep professionalism” engages with underlying psychological processes to help physicians recognize and understand their fallability.


Deep professionalism demands two elements: (1) a full understanding of the limitations of self-regulation gained via reflection, cognitive moral development, and intellectual humility; and (2) a consistent practice of behaviors embodying this understanding to serve patients and society. Tis work can help physicians to reach a more accurate understanding of the psychological processes that shape their self-perceptions and guide them toward greater patient-centric behavior. By recognizing their own limits, Sah argues, physicians can move beyond simply claiming confidence in their ethical decisions to actually making themselves more resistant to COIs. Combining deep professionalism with effective policies, she insists, will be most successful in protecting doctor and patient from conflicts of interest that can undermine health outcomes.
