In 1965 Jean Shrimpton, considered the world’s first supermodel, was invited to the Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington in Melbourne to help promote the new Fashions on the Field event (started in 1962). On this day, however, our young superstar arrived sans chapeau! The members of the racing community took a collective gasp of breath in horror! It was front page news the next day and the discussion continues even now. Last year, MIMC took its own deep breath and decided to use this as its theme for 2023: ‘What should Jean Shrimpton have worn that day?’ Dresses were commissioned, brooches made, and the search for a look-alike model began. Over 50 entrants registered for this seventh year of the competition, including milliners from around the globe as well as from Australia.

The judges were looking for comfort, technical proficiency, and what would have been ‘modern and out-there’ in 1965. Jeannie’s dress certainly caused a stir, being (horror of horrors) several inches above the knee, so her hat should also have been a talking point. The prize winners were announced as shown. The Victorian Racing Club, who run the Flemington
Racecourse, helped organise a special photo shoot in front of the members’ stand on Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day earlier this year.
