REPORT
from the customer. Translating a sketch or a photo to a plaster model is a very precise job, which is all done by hand. Within the company, four people focus on that specific part of the process. Creating the right shape for a block from sand and plaster is really like sculpturing, for which fine tools are used to get the desired result. To make a mistake is as easy as it is fatal. If the measurement is enlarged or decreased by even one or two millimetres, you have to start all over again.” Achieving an absolute smooth
surface of the plaster model is also very important – white walls and clear light ensure that the workers are able to spot any possible imperfection or shadow on the plaster models they are working on. Only after the surface of the finalised shape has been smoothened to perfection is the plaster model ready to move on to the casting stage. Generally, the production of one
set of blocks – a block and its counter mould – takes about ten hours in total. The aluminium blocks are cast in batches, each of which usually contains about nine to eleven boxes. This way, the company produces about 100 finished blocks each month. It is no surprise to learn that producing aluminium blocks and moulds over a period of 150 years has resulted in the accumulation of such a large number of plaster models that the collection has to be housed at a separate location.
