‘Hats in the museum’ talk with heritage curator and restorer Montserrat Xirau

Visit to Barcelona’s Design Museum hat archives with curator Silvia Ventosa

Barcelona 12–15 April 2023 Hosting a Spanish

multi-day hat event has been on the wish list of the organisers of the

‘Spectacular lycra swirl trimmings’ workshop by Vlad Straticiuc

Passejada amb Barret (Barcelona Hat Stroll), Cristina de Prada and Nina Pawlowsky, for

The four-day event started on 12 April and included tours in the hat archives of the Museu del Disseny (Design Museum of Barcelona), a materials market, a milliners’ dinner and almost twenty workshops and presentations by tutors from Australia, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and the UK. Prior to this, from 7 March onwards, sixteen

hats were on display in the millinery exhibition ‘Over the Top’ at the craft centre of the Artesania de Catalunya, the Consortium for Trade, Crafts and Fashion of Catalonia (CCAM). The hats for the exhibition were selected by a committee made up of Museu del Disseny curator Silvia Ventosa and milliners Marianne Jongkind and Carles Martí. “The original idea was to organise everything

at one location, but unfortunately it was not possible to find a venue that could host the whole event,” said Cristina de Prada. “In the end we used four locations. For the materials market we found a wonderful industrial space that used to be a foundry in the 19th century. Nowadays
