Darter caught drink driving was ^trying to avoid a row with vdfe’

A 42-YEAR-OLD man who incurred the wrath of his wife when he was late home from a darts match got in his van and drove away to avoid confronta tion. Unfortunately, he had

been drinking and Black burn magistrates heard that Gary Kendall was subsequently stopped by police because of the er ratic nature of his driving. A breathalyser test

showed him to be more than double to legal drink- drive limit. Miss Clare Knight (de

fending) said Taylor, who has a window cleaning round in Clitheroe, did not want to argue with his wife in front of their chil dren. “He left the house with

the intention of driving to Clitheroe, sleeping in his van and going to work the following day,” said Miss Kpight. Kendall, of Poets Road,

Burnley, pleaded guilty to drivine with excess alco hol.

He was banned from

driving for 17 months and fined £115 with £90 costs.

large organ, with breathtakingly fast changes in registration, was watched on the large screen with amazement at his combination of stops, one of

which was Scottish bagpipes. Dur ing the evening a presentation was made on behalf of the church by concert series organiser Barry Brown, with cheques for £500 presented to representatives of the North West Air Ambulance and The Chil dren’s Heart Surgery Fund. This was part of the proceeds from the

•previous series of concerts, which regu larly attract audiences from across East Lancashire, including large numbers from the Ribble Valley. This seventh season will include per

formances by the Houghton Weavers, re nowned American organist Carlo Curley and, at the next event on November 20th, the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers Band. Proceeds this time will again go to the two charities mentioned above, and to church funds. 9 For more information on the concerts

A PUPIL at Ribblesdale High School and Technol ogy College, 15-year-old Thomas Allonby, is not blowing his own trumpet - he is playing his saxo phone in an effort to help children less fortunate than'himself. Tomorrow, Thomas is

launching his very own jazz CD entitled “Just for Fun” at The Grand, proceeds of which will go towards research into children’s cancer through the Ribble Valley and White Rose Ladies’ charity. Thomas designed the art work on the CD cover, which .

■ incorporates a photograph of his sister. Ruby, and the CD will be available to the public from The Grand. Thomas, who plays his saxo

phone just for fun, also enjoys playing with other local mu sicians, Eric Ainsworth, the John Wickham Trio and Bri an Taylor’s “One Way Street” band, to mention just a few. His mentor is Brian Taylor, who has encouraged Tho

mas to continue playing after nearly giving up three years ago. Last year, he took part in the Ribble Valley Jazz Festi val. He will do so again next year, he has also played in nu merous gigs and events with the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club. Tliomas has been supported

by his parents, Paul and Julie, from being introduced to the sa.xophone while at primary school, and Brian Taylor has nutured him along the way. Thomas is also indebted to Liz Bell, who is involved with the charity he is supporting. Thomas’s future would ap

pear to be in the arts as he also attends “Stage Coach UK” ,at St Mary’s College, Blackburn, where he studies music, dance and drama. At present, he is appearing as an extra in BBC’s television drama “Waterloo Road”, set in a Rochdale comprehensive school. The CD is available from

The Grand at just £5 per copy, with all proceeds going to re search into children’s cancer.

Event raises £120k and rising

PEOPLE from around the Ribble Val ley and North and West Yorkshire joined together to make a fund-raising 24-hour' relay walking event one to remember. Organised by the Ribble Valley and

White Rose Ladies fund-raising group, and held in Hellifield, the Relay for Life event raised money for Cancer Research UK to pay for research into childhood cancers. It has so far raised an incredible £120,000 with money still coming in. As well as a fund-raiser, the event was

a celebration for adults, teenagers and children who have survived cancer. One of the survivors who attended comment ed: “For us as survivors, we found it to be a highly emotional and inspiring event, having departed on Sunday afternoon with an even higher zest for life.” Sponsor and Relay for Life team lead

er Sally Hill, who is Hospital Manager of Abbey Gisbume Park Hospital, said: “As

a hospital manager I do understand how expensive delivering care can be, and this amazing amount of money will certainly make a major contribution towards re search into childhood cancers and subse quent quality of life.”

Meanwhile, the High Sheriff of Lanca

shire, Dennis Mendoros, has announced that he will present his special award for “extraordinary and sustainable voluntary services” to the Ribble Valley and White Rose Ladies fund-raising group.
