PENDLE has had great enter tainment from when it came into being in 1974 - but since Pendle Leisure Trust was es tablished 10 years ago, even more exciting things have been

happening. The Trust has boosted the Great

British Rhythm and Blues Festival - this year it has again been a great success - and it now has the ACE Centre in Nelson as well as the Muni in Colne. Executive Development Man

ager Alison Goode said; “We have put together a more balanced pro gramme - it’s very much a team ef fort, coming up with ideas. There has got to be something for every body - different shows, different genres of music. When Pendle Leisure Trust

took over 10 years ago, there was a slight bias towards family events and audiences aged 30 plus, so there was a determination to alter that. Alison explained: “We do try

and cater for all ages, however we are now trying to attract peo ple aged between 30 and 40-plus to the ACE Centre in Nelson. In terms of the t\vo venues, Colne is a more popular location for young people.” Big events include the Blues

A GREAT NIGHT OUT: There’s a wide variety of entertainment on offer at Pendle Leisure’s venues ... from pantomimes and choirs to top comedians and much, ' much more.

Festival, the annual art exhibition - now moved to the ACE Centre, which is a more suitable venue for the display of artwork, and hap pening this month - plus the an nual festive pantomime and classic music from Manchester Camera- ta.

There are regular local amateur

groups like Pendle Borderline Theatre Company, Colne Orches- tra and Nelson Arion Male Voice Choir at the Muni. Borderline may perform its main dramas at the Muni, but it rehearses at the ACE

Centre and also holds popular pie. Peas and Poetry sessions there, too. The ACE Centre is proving a hit

as Nelson’s only cinema and .the drama group The Garrick is mov ing there from Burnley, adding even more to Pendle’s track record of great on-stage drama. Alison said: “We try to have a

couple of top profile names each year at the Muni. Peter Kay started his career here, as did Katherine Jenkins some five years ago, just as she was becoming famous. She appeared before the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall the night before she came to the Muni. She did, however, say she did prefer the intimate venue here. We have had some great events over the years.” Not all the acts are popular with

everyone. For instance, the Muni has been a venue for controver sial comedian Roy “Chubby” Brown, and as Alison said: “He’s not everyone’s taste... but he is for some!” He has managed to draw big audiences to the Muni, and the first time he appeared his right to appear was approved by the then leader of Pendle Council.” Alison added: “We want to be

successful in keeping growing and growing. In terms of the past 10 years, we have got the ACE Cen tre, which is a tremendous venue. “At the Muni, we have intro

duced new lighting, new stage design, new stage curtains, new changing rooms and lots of other things. It’s so variable. You can have 600 people one night to hear a tribute band and 300 the next lis tening to classical music.” George Critchley has been pro

viding pantomimes at the Muni and this coming winter it will be

his 15th. Alison said: “The panto mimes attract people from all over East Lancashire and are.popular with both young and old - it appeals to everybody and we have big audi ences.” And she added: “We have a focus

group which meets on a regular ba sis, made up of customers from the Muni. The same is now starting at the ACE Centre. We are looking at the thoughts shown by the focus groups. We meet three or four times a year. It’s important to get our cus tomers’ ideas. Anyone can apply by calling 661234.”

And she said: “The Blues Festival

is obviously the thing we are most proud of. This year’s was particu larly successful. It had a really good feel about it - even the weather was kind to us! The Muni was heaying. We are proud we have taken it to the ne.xt level in the past 10 years. “One couple from London hap

pened to pick up a leaflet about the festival, and came and had a ball. And two guys from Ipswich emailed me to say they had enjoyed it so much they would be back next year. “Now we have got the ACE Cen tre, we aim to have live music and

big shows at the Muni, and functions like weddings, celebratorj’ parties, conferences and exhibitions at the ACE Centre.” As well as events coming up soon,

like the arts e.xhibilion and panto mime, there are forthcoming attrac tions including cricket star David Lloyd, the Moscow Ballet and Chris and Pui from CBBC. So there is certainly a lot to consider enjoying - and no doubt it will get even better over Pendle Leisure Trust’s next 10 years!

LET IT ROCK; From the superb Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival to the excellent facili ties at the ACE Centre (below) Pendle Leisure offers some thing for everyone including a recording studio and cinema/ theatre.
