A YOUNG mother-6f-two who robbed a schoolgirl in Clitheroe Castle grounds has
been sentenced to 10 months’ youth custody. Preston Crown Court was told that because of
her ordeal the 13-year-old schoolgirl no longer wanted to go to the castle grounds. Mrs Hilary Banks (prosecuting) said the robberr-

bojiriend and asked the group if they had seen a mobile phone. The youngsters even tried to help by ringing the mobile phone number, but it was
switched off. Martin then grabbed the girl by her hair and
punched her, causing a small cut. She also took
her iPod music player. Mr James Heyworth (defending) said Martin

Grace, Nick and Richard Hardman, Carl Taylor and
Michael Whalley, camped in Littleborough playing fields the night before. Setting off at 4-43 a.m. next
day, they travelled across West Yorkshire, through the Rossendale Valley and back to Rochdale, covering 50.6 miles in a time of 20 hours and 30 minutes. Michael Whalley, recalled: “Not only was the temperature
unbearable, but there were also countless injuries, from which one team member was nearly hospitalised!” He added that the group are
indebted to their support team of Richard Harrison and Justin Swingler, who provided not only the meals and much-needed refreshments, but also a morale boost at the sbt checkpoints.
no need to thump her and hit her at all.” She added: “There was no need foryou to do what you did to this vulnerable victim in broad daylight in front of others in a relatively safe place. “The fact you are a mother makes in all the
more disgraceful, the way you acted to this child.” Judge Lloyd told Martin, who had previous
convictions for violence, the fact she had been drinking was no mitigation. At the time of the robbery, Martin, was the
subject of a suspended sentenced for being drunk and disorderly and having a bladed article in a public place. Martin, of Dowry Street, Accrington, pleaded
guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 10 months at a Young Offenders Institution.
