But this year it will be harder than ever for brides and grooms to find the spare cash for their dream day. Luckily, the v/edding industry is now so large that soon-to-be-wedded couples can shop around for bargains. If you don't like the deals you're offered from suppliers, there's a good chance you'll be able to find an online service or DIY alternative at half the price. As Abigail de Bruyne, who runs wedding venue Anstey Hall in Cambridgeshire (wvrw.ansteyhall.com) explains, the difference these days is that couples really vrant their budget to stretch.

® Know what you're getting

The modern couple want to knov/ exactly what their money is being spent on. 'Couples are now much more on top of where their money is going,” de Bruyne says.'More and more olten, we're putting together sample budgets for potential customers which include all those little added extras, such as chair covers and cake stands. Whereas in the past, they might not have had to be so detailed. 'Couples don't want to book a wedding before adding up everything and deciding what stays in and what they can do without.” The questions she gets asked the most are; "What does the venue price include?' and , "Are there any hidden costs?”. As venue hire is one of the most substantial cost commmitments for couples, making sure the price includes everything you need, from staff time to hiring tables and chairs, is important. ’For some venues, if you broke down the costs and imagined hiring in each component separately, the venue price might seem like a bargain,” says de Bruyne. ’But for other venues, perhaps not.” She adds that when choosing your other suppliers, such as caterers and florists, it is good to check the terms and conditions of their services. 'For example, some hire companies v/ili charge for breakages, so it is always important to know what the cost could be if something breaks,” she says. 'Wedding insurance al around £50 is almost a must-have as it gives you peace of mind and also could potentiaily save you thousands if a vendor lets you down.'

® Communication is key

It doesn't matter whether your budget is £500 or £50,000, if you don't let those involved understand what you want, the money will be wasted. The planning aspect of a wedding is crucial," says de Bruyne. ’The most helpful thing is to visualise and talk through your entire day, then put everything in writing. 'You might have visualised that the flowers will be in one place, but it this is not noted dovrn and conveyed to the staff who are running your day, then it won't happen. For those who think they need help, but can’t afford a wedding planner, consider coercing a friend into helping. ’It is good to talk through your day with someone vrith experience of organising an event, like a friend that has planned their own wedding, or even the venue's in-house wedding planner,” says de Bruyne. ‘Personal wedding planners can get expensive quickly, especially if they are working at a percentage of the total cost of your wedding.” But, she adds, at the end of the day, you don't want to forget those details which make the day perfect. Couples who do everything themselves can overlook the small details such tablecloths, says Abigail. ’After all, these small details aren't as fun to consider as the music and food!'

® Cutting cost corners

When thinking about ways to trim your costs, it's a good idea to find a venue that will be flexible, so you can use independent suppliers and cut expensive comers. 'If you can find a venue that is flexible on catering costs, then this could save you thousands,” says Abigail. 'A picnic, a BBQ or hog roast are all fantaslic, budget-tnendly ways of feeding large numbers of people.” Money doesn't necessarily buy a happy v/edding day, de Bruyne adds, and 'it certainly doesn't buy good taste', she says with a smile. 'Some of the absolute best weddings I've seen have been on a shoestring budget,” she says. "Couples think of ingenious ways to make their budget stretch. One couple had a weekday wedding. This meant they could invite everyone they felt obliged to, but only really close family and friends were willing to fake the day off work. ”As a result, they cut their spend per-head down. They also had friends getting married the Saturday before, and so used flowers and ribbons from this wedding.'And they even found a guy cutting ivy down the day before and used this to dress the venue.’De Bruyne adds that this couple were in a position to negotiate with all their suppliers, as it wasn't a day many would normally be working. They made all their own invitations, place cards and table plan, which created a very personal feeling,” says de Bruyne fondly. These are the little details that guests will remember from your day.” What you don't want is to be stressed and end up tailing apart on the day, she adds. "One wedding we had, the inebriated bride fell down the stairs, an ambulance v/as rushed to the scene and she was in bed by 9pm, The groom decided to go clubbing with his friends. They laughed about it the next day, but keep an eye on how much you drink on your wedding day. The last thing you want is not to be able to remember the day!”
