same car. While one family member wants a vehicle to look good and drive with a little verve, another might want seats that are easy to fold down and lots of stor age space.
Certain factions in the family
won’t give two hoots about any of that. They’ll be more inter ested in the ma.ximum volume of stereo system, the quantity of 12-voIt charging points for games consoles, whether their bikes will fit in the boot or how long it takes to colour-in the back of the headrest with a felt tip pen. Pleasing all of the family all
of the time sounds impossible but Ford’s C-MAX MPV is up for giving it a good go. There’s nothing old fash
ioned about the C-MAX en gine range, Ford having fitted a collection of leading edge powerplants littered with the kind of technology that the layman has no hope of under standing. There are 1.6-litre Ti-VCT petrol units with in dependent variable camshaft timing and 1.6-litre EcoBoost SCTi engines that also run on unleaded but also feature a low-inertia turbocharger. The diesels are 1.6 or 2.0-Iitre in ca pacity and share Ford’s TDCi high pressure common-rail di rect injection technology. The standard C-MAX is very
similar in size to the model it replaced and features a curv ing roofline that drops away towards the rear for a sporty jook. The Grand C-MAX is fully 4,520mm long with a wheelbase increased by 140mm compared to the standard car. It’s also 40mm taller and these extended dimensions allow it to cram in that third row of seating. The roof line is flatter and
the window pillars are thinner- to enhance the view out of the Grand C-MAX.but the other major difference is that, while the C-MAX has conventional rear doors, the Grand C-MAX employs sliding doors on its flanks. This creates wider ap ertures for improved access to the rear seats and eliminates the risk of children clouting adjacent cars when they clam ber out in the car park. The design inside the C- MAX looks slick. In line with
the other modern Fords, there’s plenty of metallic de tailing and the quality of fit and finish seems high. It’s the C-MAX seats that
will provoke the most inter est, however, as the designers clearly did a lot of work on maximising versatility. In the Grand C-MAX the
sliding side doors mean it’s possible to access the third row without sliding or tilting the outer seats in the second row. There’s also a clever feature where the centre seat in the second row can collapse un der the right hand seat, giving a sbv-seater layout with walk through access to the rear. The 5-seat models don’t miss out. They get the same seats
which tumble down individu ally in one motion to create a flat floor: there are just less of them. It was clear what the Ford C-
MAX needed to really make it big in the compact MPV sector and that was seven seats. To day, the Grand C-MAX fulfils that requirement, leaving the standard model free to tread a smaller, sportier path. The family buyers that the C-MAX is targeting are a demanding bunch but the good looks, spa cious cabin and eye-opening versatility of the current range seems certain to convince a fair number of them.

THE hot hatch game has moved on considerably since Volkswagen unveiled the supercharge'd Polo GT G40 at the 1985 Frankfurt Motorshow and followed it up with the Polo G40 Cou
pe production car. The original hot Polo had a

1.3- litre engine and tipped the scales at under 800kg while the modern Polo GTI has a 1.4- litre capacity and weighs close to 1,200kg. If that doesn’t sound much'like progress, bear with us because while the supercharged Polo G40 de veloped 112bhp, today’s Polo GTI has 178bhp courtesy of its supercharged and turbo charged powerplant. Still not impressed? Well, the car also comes with a seven-speed DSC paddle-shift gearbox and an XDS electronic differential as part of its ESP stability con trol system - all of which would have sounded like gobblede- gook in 1986. There will still be those who
favour the simple approach of the origiital G40 Coupe but there’s a lot to admire about the way the Polo GTI goes about its business. The 1.4-litre TSI engine uses
a supercharger to boost per formance low in the rev range helping develop 250Nm at just 2,000rpro. The turbocharger cuts in at 3,000rpm taking the engine up to its peak power of 178bhp at 6.200ipm. It all makes for a 0-62mph
sprint of 6.9s and a 142mph top speed, easily guaranteeing
membership of the hot hatch club. Part of the problem with GTI versions of the Polo has been that, in line with Volkswa gen’s classily low key styling policy, they haven’t really stood out from the less extreme mod els in the range. This GTI fares a little better
with lots of the styling cues seen previously on its big brother, the Golf. There are deeper bumpers with a single wide air- dam at the front and a diffuser at the rear with twin chrome exhausts. Red stripes line the honeycombe front grille and the headlight clusters include LED running lights. The hot test Polo also rides on stiffer springs and dampers, 15mm lower than other Pdlos. Evidence of Volkswagen’s
intention to push the GTI as a standout model from the wider Polo range comes with the deletion of all Polo badging. The car is simply marked up as ‘GTI’ on the grille and the tailgate. There’s more differentiation
inside where the Polo’s well- finished cabin gets a sporty feel with sports seats in tartan trim, a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, aluminium pedals and revised instruments. The Polo GTI is one of the most technologically advanced small cars on the market as well as one of the quickest. It sports the usual Volkswagen GTI styling cues and will serve as a tempting option for those who can’t quite stretch to the
. budget needed for a perform ance Golf. Volkswagen’s build quality and materials should help set this hot Polo apart from its small hot hatch rivals.
