MEMBERS past and present of Whalley-based choir Valley Voic es are being urged by its founder- conductor Glen Pate to attend a meeting on Monday night. The choir has seen a sudden dip
in membership and the meeting is being held to discuss possible ways to revitalise it. Mr Pate said: “I am proud of
what we have achieved over the past couple of years, but there
are issues which need to be ad dressed. “There are several options for
the choir, but these need to be dis cussed thoroughly. “We have built up a wonderful
repertoire of serious, and none- too-serious, pieces in a short time and include music of many styles from the ancient to the modern. It can be challenging, but it can be fun too.”
The choir has given successful
concerts since its foundation two years ago and taken part in a re cording which should be available in November. Anyone interested in attending
the meeting - including prospec tive new members - should go to English Martyrs’ R.C. Church, Whalley, at 7-30 p.m. on Monday night. For more information call 01254 824312.
Lottery boost for mobility charity
A CHARITY which pro vides scooters and pow ered wheelchairs, enabling people with limited mobil ity to shop independently, has received a cash boost of £9,500. Ribble Valley Shop-
mobility, which recently moved from Clitheroe Market to the Pendle Club in Lowergate, received the money from National Lot tery Funding. The money will fund the
charity’s new website and go towards providing serv ices to help more people to use the mobility scoot ers. Simon O’Rourke (37), who runs the organisation.
said he was delighted with the amount received. He said: “I applied for the funding last year and I am really pleased that we re ceived it. This will enable us to expand our service to more users.” Ribble Valley Shopmo-
bility is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are also three off-road mobil ity scooters available for hire. The vehicles can be delivered to surround ing rural areas for a small charge providing trans port is available at the re quested time.
LOTTERY FUNDING: Donna and Simon O’Rourke with Andrea Duckworth from CVS with the National Lottery funding.
A history of Methodism
FARMHOUSES turned into chapels, clergy walking miles to preach up to 14 times a week and singing banned at Sunday service. These were just some of the fas
cinating facts uncovered by Howel Jones’ talk on “The History of Methodism in the Ribble Valley” to members of Clitheroe Civic So ciety. The talk started with a short
biography of the co-founders of the movement. Lincolnshire-born brothers John and Charles Wesley. John Wesley was “marked out” as a youngster when their fam ily home caught fire and he was “plucked from the burning”. He and his brother Charles formed a “Holy Club” in Oxford, largely to save their own souls. They me thodically visited the sick, the poor and the imprisoned: hence the name Methodism. John Wesley suffered a lack of
thanlctiieffl ail! <
faith in America, where he had gone to convert the Indians, ex claiming “Who will convert me”,’ but in 1738 in Bristol he converted a group of 3,000 miners, regarded as “depraved savages”. The head quarters moved to a derelict build ing in London and Bible Societies sprang up all over the country as part of circuits and districts. The clergy, ordained Anglicans as well as some laymen, often preached 14 times a week, travelling 15 to 20 miles a day on horseback. As to how and when Method
ism arrived in the Ribble Val iev. it anoarentlv came via West
Yorkshire. There was an Angli can chapel of ease in Haworth, where Rev.
W.Grimshaw allowed Methodist preachers to conduct services. Word spread via Colne and Skipton to Clitheroe by 1814. Societies were formed in farm houses or large houses in isolated communities in the Ribble Valley, such as Twiston. Many of these soon folded due to splinter groups within the church and depopula tion in the villages. Wesley himself visited Gisburn in 1784 at the age of 81, when a typical day started at 4 a.m. and finished with evening
. prayer at 9-30 p.m. He also visited Ribchester and Chipping, where he encountered resistance in the form of eight or 10 people who tried to prevent him from preach ing there. Mr Jones than gave a breakdown
of what has happened to various Wesleyan chapels over the years. Some, like Downham, were sold off and turned into village halls. Others, like Bashal Eaves, became tea rooms and still more, like the Primitive Methodist chapel at Chatbum, were rebuilt. The trend away from the chap
els reflected the growing depopu lation of the countryside in the nineteenth centu^. Rimington, a thriving community of 700 inhab itants in 1831, was reduced to just 290 in 1901. Downham was simi larly reduced from 620 inhabitants in 1821 to 281 in 1871. People emi grated to America and Australia due to unemolovment and novertv
and there was a cholera outbreak in 1859. It seems the local preachers had
a strenuous life visiting isolated ru ral communities and much dedica tion was demanded of them. The preacher visiting the far-flung chapel at Paythome covered three services, incorporating Long Pres ton, and walked 39 miles in 16 hours. One young minister arriv ing from Manchester to preach in Slaidburn in 1841 wrote in his di ary “I fear it will be too hard”, but he stayed two years before moving on to Durham and said Slaidburn was his favourite place. There were other obstacles to
cope with. Early on, relations be tween the Parish Church in Whal ley and the Methodists were not good. The vicar, a magistrate, banned singing at Sunday service and the told the Parish Church bell ringers to ring the bells very loudly when it was going on. Despite all the complications
there are six Methodist chapels still in existence today in the Clit heroe circuit: Trinity, Chatburn, Paythorne, Whalley, Wadding ton, and West Bradford. Shifts in population, splinter groups, two World Wars, the increase in mo bility and in secular culture did not deter these dedicated preachers and their followers. The talk ended with an acknowl
edgement of the local contribution made by Cyril Ainsworth in his two books on the Clitheroe Methodist circuit.
