HAVING known Chris Scott for the best part o f seven years, it was fairly surreal to be inundated with text mes sages asking if I was going to see “Scotty” on Friday night. It hasn’t gone unnoticed
that with a number of radio appearances and some very well-received local shows, he is building a reputation as a rising star. I had no doubt he was destined to entertain - but I would never have put him down as a crooner. With that in mind, I had to attendl The Grand, in Clitheroe,

is a spectacularly modern venue and the atmosphere was building when I arrived at around 7 p.m. It wasn’t long until the acts arrived on stage. David James and Nick Gizzi’s laid back acoustic styles were a splendid accom paniment to the first drinks of the night. As more people began to arrive, Laura James took over - the 19-year-old almost hypnotising the audi ence with her striking voice and sublime original songs. The John Wickham Trio were up next, performing their own great takes on clas sic blues and jazz numbers. Make no mistake, these acts were worth the ticket price alone, but now it was time for the main event. Never one to be outdone,

certainly tapping their feet to Chris’s latest single “Crazy Days”, which he promised

maculately planned and prepared and his superb seven-piece band comple mented his voice impeccably. He ended the show with a take on Paolo Nutini’s “New Shoes”, which was met with roof-raising applause from the entire audience. I can honestly say that
Chris Scott’s set at The Grand was the best stage show I’ve seen this year. A bunch of teenagers and twenty-somethings dancing to swing and soul music is a rare sight and is perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid to Chris. When he next returns to his hometown of Clitheroe, I’m sure that same sight will be repeated, and I’ll be down the front to see it first hand.
