global food market space in Manhattan many years ago. Urban Hawker has 17 vendors, with 11 of them from Singapore, curated by KF Seetoh. On offer are traditional hawker staples such as Nanyang Kopi (coffee), kaya toast, white bee hoon noodles, satay, beef rendang, mee rebus, and iconic Hainanese Chicken Rice. This is the first authentic Singapore Street food center in the US, celebrating Malay, Peranakan, Chinese, Indian, and Southeast Asian cuisine found in Singapore’s hawker centres.
Wendy’s is set to debut in Australia. It will be one of the last American popular burger chains to break into the Australian Market. Competing with McDonald’s and Burger King (known as Hungry Jacks in Australia), Wendy’s is known for its square burgers, baked potatoes and frosty desserts. It will have to battle with recent American burger chain arrivals in Australia: Five Guys, Wahlburgers, and Carl’s Jr. Australia appears to be hungry for new American burger options.
Olive Garden opens in the Philippines
Olive Garden, the popular US Italian-American food chain just opened its first branch in the Philippines. The Bistro Group known for international franchises like Italianni’s, Denny’s, Hard Rock Café, and Randy’s Donuts made this expansion to the Philippines possible. The newly opened restaurant occupies 382 sq m (4,100 sq ft) and seats 300 people. Darden Restaurants Inc signed the franchise deal with The Bistro Group in 2019, with a launch set for 2020. However, the pandemic slowed things down. With Manila bouncing back from the pandemic, Olive Garden is ready to build the brand in the Philippines. Filipinos are hungry to get their fill of Olive Garden’s famous Chicken Alfredo, and the iconic breadsticks.
