088 DESIGN FOR RESILIENCE

These images Morris + Company’s upcoming emergency housing in Newham, London, designed to provide dignity in private and communal spaces, and allow families, particularly, to rebuild their lives

CASE STUDY MORRIS + COMPANY: NEWHAM COUNCIL EMERGENCY HOUSING

An ambitious design for new, family-friendly emergency housing was granted planning permission by Newham Council in the summer of 2020. The fruit of many years of research and engagement with shelter users and charities, Morris + Company’s scheme, which was won at a RIBA competition run by client Bedu, reimagines the normally shoddy, single-room, homeless provision as something that will bring dignity and community to this vulnerable population. The scheme provides 27 new emergency accommodation units for

families ranging from two to five members, along with amenities and space for support staff. Driven by the need to create a secure and stable environment for children, each unit is designed as a standalone home within a wider group cluster, each with its own front door and dedicated garden space. Each unit features individual washrooms and facilities for families to cook and eat meals together. Communal facilities include a lounge, a kitchen and laundry room.

Interior layouts are user-driven, with multifunctional spaces for

cooking, dining, playing and learning. Integrated seating at windowsills provides space for quiet reflection, with views on to a shared, landscaped courtyard offering both play space and shared seating for resident families. Front doors open on to this courtyard, as do the entrance, reception area and communal spaces. Morris + Company director Miranda MacLaren said, ‘The correct balance of moments of quiet and privacy, and the need for spaces to encourage exchange were carefully considered throughout the design, at every scale.’
