Japanese martial arts, and will house them once again.

Established in 1940, the Equestrian Park was used in 1964 and has been upgraded for use again. Eventing will take place on reclaimed land at the Sea Forest cross-country course. Sailing will be at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour, another 1964 legacy venue. Te Kokugikan Arena, normally home of sumo wrestling, will be used for the boxing. A multipurpose exhibition centre opened in 1997 as a performing arts centre, the Tokyo International Forum will host weightlifting and powerlifting competitions. Te Ariake Arena is a new venue constructed for the Games to host volleyball and wheelchair basketball, located next door to the Tennis Park with 48 courts, and an all- weather Centre Court with a retractable dome roof. A new temporary venue at Ariake will be home to gymnastics and an ancient Greek ally of pétanque and bowls – boccia, a Paralympic event since 1984, and one of only two that does not have an Olympic equivalent. Te Ariake urban sports park will be home to BMX cycling and skateboarding. At the heart of the Ariake sport facility, Tokyo Big Sight is the largest convention and exhibition centre in Japan, comprising large-scale exhibition halls, international conference facilities and a reception hall. During the Games, the complex will house the International Broadcast Centre and the main press centre.

Road walking events will be split between the Imperial Palace Garden, a very traditional space surrounded by historic buildings, and Sapporo Odori Park on Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, where the marathons will also be run. Badminton, modern pentathlon and wheelchair basketball will be held in the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza. Baseball and softball will be played at the Olympics for the first time in the very fine Yokohama Baseball
