IN THIS ISSUE, we’re delighted to involve so many of you in participating in our editorial this month. We have Marc Wood with his powerful insights on radical thinking ahead of the FX Talks, and Richard Parr choosing some of my favourite paintings from the UK collections, a profi le on Michelle Nicholls and
Carolyn Ouwehand of GHA coming up with a great If Only (there weren’t any problems). Meanwhile, at the time of writing, we still have the question
of the Tokyo Olympics – will it/won’t it happen? So much blood, sweat and tears, not to mention a huge investment of almost $30bn, has gone in to delivering this for 2020 – and then again for this year – that it seems likely it can’t go ahead with restrictions on travel, crowds and athletes unable to train. Maybe behind closed doors for a select few, but how few before it loses its identity as world-class sport? As Stephen Hitchins writes, ‘Block-booked seven years in advance, this is a multibillion-dollar, made-for- television extravaganza that serves as an investment vehicle for scores of sponsors and media partners, and as a source of entertainment for millions.’ T ankfully, Veronica Simpson has written the aptly named
feature on Design for Resilience, which champions your characteristics of inventiveness and vision to deliver projects in economic and cultural uncertainty. So, my thanks to you and our industry for making life better and keeping us inspired at FX.
