WELCOME L

Pharmacy in Focus Awards ceremony.

This year I was honoured to present the Award to an old colleague, Mr Donald Moore, who I worked closely with when he was Treasurer of Ulster Chemists’ Association. Donald Moore, contractor with Gilford Pharmacy and Director of Rymer Distribution, recently retired from his position as Treasurer of Community Pharmacy NI.

He received the accolade for his long service and dedication to supporting fellow Pharmacists and the Profession on a number of representative organisations. The event was a great success – congratulations to Donald and all the worthy award winners. See more on page 9.

It’s that time of year again when UCA starts planning for the next Foundation Training Year – information below on the 23-24 programme plus UCA is also starting to compile its Placement Recruitment Guide for 25-26 for distribution to incoming 3rd years undergraduates. More information below.

Plans are already underway for the new Foundation Trainee Leadership & Management Programme for 2023-24.

With some information on the eligible cohorts for the 23/24 Flu season recently published by DoH, and in anticipation of an Autumn Covid Vaccination programme being rolled out, UCA will provide New and Refresher Vaccination Training sessions in August and September. Look out for booking forms via email.

If you would like to receive communications from UCA-NI, please add your details to our database by emailing office@uca.org.uk

UCA has been really pleased by the response to the programme from both Foundation Trainees and Educational Supervisors. The UCA course complements the NICPLD programme by focussing on sector-specific training for Community Pharmacy as well as leadership and management skills development and self- development & building resilience.

Educational Supervisors like the programme because it offers training they cannot replicate in the pharmacy and Trainee benefits include opportunities to hear from specialist pharmacists, nurses and management trainers and practical learning they can apply back in the pharmacy.

FOUNDATION TRAINEE RECRUITMENT

UCA-NI is now taking bookings for its Foundation Trainee Placement Recruitment Guide for 2025-26.

We will be compiling our digital booklet over the summer months ready to present to new 3rd year undergraduates this autumn. The digital booklet is distributed to all Schools of Pharmacy across GB as well as our local universities at UU and QUB. UCA will also be attending Careers Fairs and taking other opportunities to talk to 3rd undergraduates about placements in Community Pharmacy.

Given an increase in intake into pharmacy degrees in NI, following the Covid pandemic, we anticipate a growth in interest in placements here. Lookout for an email from UCA and fill in the online form asap to secure your place in the booklet.

The big advantage of the UCA programme is that we offer in-person training days where Trainees can chat to their peers and benchmark their learning and progress – it is a great way for trainees to let off a bit of steam, connect with old and make new friends.

The Foundation Training Year can be really stressful with Trainees feeling isolated from their peers, so the benefits of our group training days cannot be underestimated.
