HEALTH AND WELLBEING COMMITMENT TO
NORTHERN PHARMACIES HOLYWOOD & GREYABBEY
Northern Pharmacies have been recognized with the 'Commitment to Health and Wellbeing' award for their exceptional contribution to the local community through the provision of health and wellbeing initiatives.
The pharmacy's coordinated response to the unexpected surge in Group A streptococcus (GAS), also known as Strep A, in December 2022 demonstrated their commitment to improving public health.

of antibiotics contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance, which can lead to the emergence of untreatable infections. Northern Pharmacies recognized the need to address this issue at a community level and made it their responsibility to support action locally.
Building on their previous experience trialling a 'Test and Treat' service for coughs and sore throats, Northern Pharmacies responded to the surge in
Strep A by quickly setting up a similar Test and Treat service. The service involved patient assessments and throat swabs to determine whether a patient had a Strep A infection.
Pharmacists were trained to use test kits, carry out consultations, and make judgments on clinical presentations. Quality assurance tests were carried out regularly, and the Strep A test kits used had both internal and external quality controls.
