Patrick has strived to advance the role of community pharmacy within the health service

In the past year, Patrick faced the challenge of patients being unable to order repeat prescriptions due to difficulties contacting GP surgeries. The issue caused anxiety and concerns to patients, especially to those who are dependent on receiving repeat prescriptions.

To address this issue, Patrick introduced the Healthera App ordering system into his pharmacy, which streamlines the process for patients ordering repeat prescriptions, reassuring patients that they would receive the medication they needed.

Patrick has also had a positive impact on the operational effectiveness of the pharmacy. He has adapted the patient services provided by his pharmacy making them more streamlined and efficient, to ensure patients can access the services that they need.

To accommodate working people, the pharmacy opens from 8:30 am to 7pm to provide pharmaceutical care for the working person. He has also delivered multiple vaccine clinics for the delivery of the COVID vaccine, COVID booster, and flu vaccine, through the implementation of private evening vaccine clinics to

facilitate those people who work during the day.

Recognizing that the operational effectiveness of the pharmacy cannot be achieved by embracing technological solutions alone, he encourages staff development by providing his colleagues with opportunities to progress, including NVQ Courses, Pharmacy Technician courses, and Buttercups and Numark training for shop staff.

Patrick prides himself on ensuring that he provides protected time with his Foundation Year Trainee to help develop the pharmacists of the future.

Patrick has strived to advance the role of community pharmacy within the health service. His volunteering for several health initiatives with Omagh GAA and SureStart, as well as his community pharmacy initiatives

demonstrates that the role of community pharmacy is not just constrained to the pharmacy premises but can take an active role in promoting health and wellbeing within the community.

His pharmacy also offers a weight loss management programme, a minor ailments scheme, a smoking cessation programme, and out of hours palliative care, demonstrating how Patrick has changed the perceptions of community pharmacy as something more than simply a dispensary for medicines.

Overall, Patrick McMahon’s innovative approach to medicines, willingness to embrace technological solutions, and commitment to community outreach has made him a worthy recipient of the ‘Pharmacist of the Year’ award.

Congratulations Patrick!
