DEAL TAXI DRIVER TO THE RESCUE IN HOUSE BLAZE

A quick-thinking taxi driver has been praised by firefighters for his bravery when a blaze broke out in a house in Deal. Mark Turner was in his vehicle

at the

Blenheim Road junc- tion with Gilford Road when he saw smoke coming from an end of terrace house. Deal

Fire Stat ion

watch manager Paul Vanstone told the East Kent Mercury : “He saw a woman running back inside the house, so he parked the taxi, ran to lead her to safe- ty before going back to shut the door to the kitchen, where the fire had brok en out. He also closed the back door to bottle up the blaze. He was brave, witho ut being reck- less.” The fire at the house in

Gilford Road started in the kitchen, possibly when a chip pan caught alight. Heat melted water pipe joints caus- ing flooding and the home was blackened by smoke. Mr Turner, of Courtenay Road, Deal, was driving for Castle A1 Taxis, when he saw the smoke. He said: “So I parked

up on the side of the road and saw the lady coming out of the house to knock on a neighbour’s door. “She was disappearing back into her house, so I followed her in and told her she ought to get out. With her out- side I ran back in, kicked the back door shut and then closed the kitchen door. The flames were quite intense. “She hadn’t raised the alarm so I called 999 on my mobile and the fire engine arrived a few minutes later.” Mr Turner, 46, a self- employed taxi driver, stayed with the woman until her friend arrived. “Then I went back to work. I wanted to help the lady and she was ok, which was the main thing. The house can be redone.”

DRIVER SAVES GRIMSBY TEEN FROM ROBBERY

A taxi driver saved a teenager

from an

attempted robbery in Grimsby. According to the Grims- by Evening Telegraph, the 17-year-old man was walking towards the junction of Duncombe Streeton Tuesday March 24, when he was approachedby twomen.

The men demanded the teenager’s mobile phone, and when he refused, they pulled him to the ground. At the same time, about 11.50pm, a passing cab- bie saw what was happening and turned around, causing the two suspects to run off in the direction of AlbionStreet.

Both men are described as being white males aged in their late teens or early 20s, both of slim build between 5ft 8in and 5ft 11in tall. They were both wear- ing dark clothing at the time; however, one had a blue baseball cap on and the other had a scarf covering his face.

BRAVE WALTHAM ABBEY CABBIE IS HAILED A HERO

A cabbie who helped free four children follow- ing a car crash has been honoured for his “selflessact of bravery”. John Davis, of Waltham Abbey, was presented with a certification of appreciation recognised at Epping Forest Coun- cil’s Civic Awards. According to the Lea Valley Star, Mr Davis was

driving near

Upshire when he spot- ted a car shoot up into the air before crashing.

He slammed on his brakes and ran to the scene, where he found an unconscious woman, Juliet Anderson, and her four young children. Helped by two women, whose car had also been involved, Mr Davis, 41, battled to free the children before turn- ing to the second car, which was in flames. As the blaze spread, there was no time to wait for firefighters so they had to drag an

unconscious man from the burning car. The Anderson family said they are “eternally grateful” toMr Davis and police have described his actions last July as “incredibly brave”. Mr Davis insisted he would only accept an award if it was in recog- nition of the bravery of his fellow rescuers as well as his own. He said: “It puts life into perspective and stil l crosses my mind.”
