KIND FARNBOROUGH CABBIE DIGS DEEP TO DONATE 50P A FARE
A cabbie from Farnbor- ough is donating some of his takings to the Surrey Air Ambulance. Dave Hooker decided to act when he heard that the air ambulance receives no government funding and depends on donations to stay afloat. He began last month by donating 50p of every fare over £5 and carry- ing a jar for passengers who want to donate. Mr Hooker, 52 told the Aldershot News that
most people were giv- ing more than 50p on top of their fares. He visited the air ambu- lance base in Dunsfold Park near Cranleigh. “There’s so much equipment there and I couldn’t believe it’s all paid for by donations,” Mr Hooker told the Aldershot News. A taxi firm owner has pledged his support for victims of the devastat- ing Italian earthquake which claimed the lives of more than 290 peo- ple and made more than 40,000 homeless. Mohammed Shabir, proprietor of Betta Cars, of Dogsthorpe Road, Peterborough, wants to raise money to help the families of the hundreds killed and injured and thousands of people left homeless in the town of L’Aquila following the natural disaster last month. Mr Shabir said he was planning on fitting
money boxes in his taxis to allow customers to pledge their support for the campaign. He is also considering donating money from every call made to the taxi service. He told the Peterbor- ough
Evening
Telegraph: “I saw the pictures on the news and thought that I had to help out. “Every penny helps, and I am sure everyone wants to support this goodcause. Youseepic- tures of people who are hungry and homeless, and as a human being you just have to help. “We will be putting coin
boxes in the back of the taxi for loose change, and donating 50p for every call we receive. “I also have a limousine hiring service, and we will donate £10 from every booking for that as well.” The money will be put towards a collection being organised by Cllr Marco Cereste, who is also chairman of the Peterborough Italian Community Association. More than 24,000 peo- ple made homeless by the earthquake are liv- ing in tent camps around the stricken region.
Two taxi drivers, a bus driver and five super- market workers have teamed up to trek around the coast of the Isle of Wight to raise money for the air ambu- lance. Spokesman Alan Hill
and his friends want to raise at least £4,500 on their 65-mile walk and have left sponsor forms in pubs around Brid- port so people can support them. The team sets off in May. Picture shows from left,
