on

Sunday 15th March for the launch of a voca- tional course in NVQ level 2 in Road Passen- ger Vehicle Training & BTEC qualification for Transporting Passen- ger by Taxi and Private Hire to improve their customer skills and public safety. At the moment the course is optional and may become mandatory as part of the licensing

process when applying for a taxi or private hire driver’s licence. The seminar hosted at Chiltern Hotel, chaired by Sirfraz Choudhry of the Luton Borough Drivers Union (LBDU) and Aftab Ahmed, Director of Community Training Portal (CTP) led to an overwhelming response. LBDU is the largest organisation of its kind in Bedfordshire with over 650 members and was set up as a vol- untary organisation to make the private hire

consultation document released by the Licens- ing Department, which was later scrapped. Recently, there has been some confusion over the course and course providers. Tony Ireland, Licensing Serv- ice Manager from Luton Borough Council has said, “I have absolutely no such concerns about

Training Portal,

Community its

accreditatio n nor its ability to deliver the training.” In a letter to LBDU, he says “that drivers are not restrict- ed in their choice of provider.” LBDU feels that this course will give the taxi and private hire drivers a more professional standard and bring then into line with simi- lar qualifications that have been introduced

for many jobs that are now accepted by the licensing trade. The drivers will gain recog- nition

for their

experience in the key areas of Health & Safe- ty,

teamwork,

communication, prob- lem solving, customer service,

personal

development, disability legislation and discrim- ination awareness. Chairman of LBDU, Sir- fraz Choudhry says, “it is very important that drivers are rewarded for their skills. Once they have qualified, they can be recognised by members of the public

interest and signed up with CTP.” He adds, “This is the first step in a great stride towards progress among our members in the trade.” Mr Choudhry

also

says, “Private hire and hackney carriage driv- ers are the ‘working force’ of Luton’s public service. The Union’s object is to recognise and honour the mem- bers

exceptional

services and achieve- ments. This vocational qualification will help sustain the delivery of a quality and profession- al service to the customers”. The Chairman of LBDU would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated

in the organising and deliverance of the sem- inar. Also, the LBDU Executive team, the Committee members, staff and directors of CTP and a special thanks to every single private hire driver who attended the seminar at Chiltern Hotel. Should you wish to contact the LBDU, or would like to become a member and would like to find out more about the course please tele- phone us on: 07508 169 583.
