4 PRIVATE HIRE AND TAXI MONTHLY

Well, you’ve seen it all on Page One: we’re celebrating our 200th issue. That is some fantastic kind of mile- stone,

especially in this day and age, and in this economic

climate

where financial uncer- tainty prevails on too many fronts. Looking back at yours truly’s first introducto- ry article on Page Three (then) of our first issue, we started out by stressing the very same point we still go on about today: that our contin- uance depends on your readership, and your participation, thusly: “So you see, it’s down to you to help guarantee that we continue to pro- duce and circulate a jam-packed, quality publication. There’s so much to be done; and so much is down to you.” Hopefully over the ensuing 199 issues we’ve learned a thing or two along the way;

ASWE SAID 200 ISSUES AGO... WELCOME ABOARD! readers

more importantly, we hope our

have as well! Certain- ly the feedback we have received from PHTM readers and NPHA members over the years has bol- stered the old adage that

‘knowledge is

power’ - and igno- rance is no defence for anybody. So enough about All Our Yesterdays... get reading about today’s goings-on. First and foremost of course is the Exhibition: all the details are set out inside this issue, so we very much look forward to seeing you in person at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, on Wednesday

and

Thursday, 27 and 28 May. You might even win yourself a Merc! But before you drive off into the distance in your new set of wheels, do please take a moment

to

glance through our momentous anniver- sary issue. Opinion is a look back at figures

As is our Company Profile, which this month goes to south- east London and visits Greyhound Cars of Streatham, whose his- tory relates a tale of striving for high quali- ty through sound investment and pio- neering trade moves. Our

features Birmingham cabbie Ruth Watts, who has now become a member of the Birm- i n g h a m - b a s e d training provider Dri- veSafe and is helping candidates to pursue

these qualifications. Bravo! Read more inside. Not only is this our 200th issue, and our Exhibition issue, but it’s also our bumper Taxi Fares League Tables issue; this time you are presented with a full ten-year profile of how every area that sets taxi fares has fared (go on, allow one pun at least) over

the decade.

Check it out. Also, the national average two- mile fare on Tariff One is now £5.06. How’s your tariffs doing?

Other departments proliferate as usual; ‘Rank

Rumblings’

continues to rumble apace, as more and more areas report that there are too many taxis vying for too little custom, and not enough rank spaces to

accommodate

them. We’ve got to the stage that in some areas,

action in the form of strikes and slow drive- throughs

to

in some areas; closed doors in

enabling us to bring you our 200th edition. See you at the show! And if you’re reading this at the Ricoh Arena, stop by the PHTM stand and the NPHA stand and say hi in person - we look for- ward to meeting you.
