READING DRIVER CALLS FOR ACTION ON ‘FALSE’ TAXI LICENCE

A taxi driver who claims his cab was torched by arsonists after becoming the target of a hate cam- paign has filed a petition calling on town hall bosses to take action on false licences. Tahir Abdullah feared he was deliberately attacked after threat- ening to expose alleged fraud in the town’s ranks, causing legitimate cabbies to lose business. He claims many driv- ers have been granted licences based on false information stat- ing they had met council criteria to have worked full time as a taxi driver in the town for three years. The 32-year-old has now received support

from more than 140 cabbies calling for an inquiry into the issu- ing of taxi licences, which was to be hand- ed over to Reading Borough Council. Mr Abdullah told the Reading

Evening

Post: “This petition shows the strength of feeling. “I feel very confident with the overwhelming support from the taxi drivers in the ranks. “People are being given licences and double shifting by let- ting their relations drive while they do other jobs and not being honest about their hours or declar- ing their true income. “We are having to put in a lot more hours than we ever imag- ined and have to

work very hard. It’s seriously unfair and we want a full inquiry.” Mr Abdullah previous- ly told the Evening Post that false infor- mation has been provided to the coun- cil

concerning

references relating to licensing criteria. Drivers in the town must have worked 37 hours a week for three years to be eligible for a hackney carriage propritor’s licence. Mr Abdullah estimates up to 20 drivers have been granted licences based on false infor- mation. His estimate is based on docu- ments obtained from the borough council and personal knowl- edge. He told how his taxi

was written off after being doused in oil and set alight outside his home. Mr Abdullah claimed that he had been warned by some other cabbies after complaining to Read- ing Borough Council that many drivers had been

granted

licences based on false information. Reading Taxi Drivers’ Association chairman Naeem Sheikh previ- ously told the Evening Post information pro- vided was correct, with the borough stat- ing that it was liaising with the Thames Val- ley Police in light of the allegations. The petition also fol- lows the council’s decision not to issue any further licences

needs to be looked at for drivers in the future. “We are speaking up for what is right so those that deserve a licence get one and do not end up in the wrong hands by those using the system.”
