62 PRIVATE HIRE AND TAXI MONTHLY IN THE NEWS DAVID IS MORE THAN A FARE ARTIST

Taxi users in Chel- tenham are hailing one of

the town’s most

unusual artistic talents - only they probably don’t know it. David White,

from

Whaddon, has made a living as a cabbie for the past six years, but his day job belies a fervent passion for art, and the desire to one day draw profession- ally. Slotted alongside the driver’s seat

is a

sketchpad and set of drawing

pencils,

which he uses at any possible opportunity, transforming

the

inside of his car into a makeshift studio. And while waiting for the next fare, he turns up the music and gets lost in a haze of creativ- ity,

producing

impressive pictures of animals, portraits, and still-life.

The 43-year-old, who is known by other drivers on the taxi rank simply as “the artist”, told the Gloucestershire Echo: “I can only draw in the car, it’s my studio. It’s warm and scented, I get in the zone and it is as if I’m on a mission. “There is a spiritual side to what I do and the only way I can cap- ture the aura Is when I’m in the car.

“In my job you meet lots of people, and I can draw inspiration from the way they look, and from their experi- ences. “And although I’m here in Cheltenham, when I pick up that pencil I could be anywhere in the world.” David is hoping to take his talent a stage further and draw for a living one day. He

added: “I believe I’ve been given the ability to draw for a reason. My pictures always carry hidden mes- sages and I want to use my gift to provoke people into thinking differently. “I’m currently setting up a website formy pic- tures, so people will have a chance to see my work on a wider level.” Fellow taxi driver Geof- frey Hinton,

from

Tewkesbury, said: “I’ve been telling David for the last two years that he has a rare natural ability. “We’re all telling him he is wasted on the taxi rank. I wouldn’t be at all surprised

if he’s

famous one day. “Some of his drawings are seriously good and much better than the work of established artists.”

SWANSEA TAXI CANDIDATE MAY ADD CONFUSION AT BALLOT BOX

Voters in Swansea may be faced with a confus- ing choice between candidates Peter May and ... Peter May. Liberal Democrat coun- cillor Peter May might now he battling it out with a namesake, after Swansea Independent Hackney Taxi Associa- tion (SIHTA) said it would be putting for- ward its own candidate, who has the same name. And the confusion doesn’t end with the name of the candidate. The “new” Peter May is hoping to stand for the Liberal Democracy Party, if that party name can be registered. The taxi association has recently seen a request for a cap on hackney licences in Swansea rejected by Swansea Council. A spokesman told the South Wales Evening Post: “Peter May of the

Liberal Democrats

could well win the SwanseaWest seat and we are campaigning against

the Liberal

Democrats who have voted to not cap the hackney licences in Swansea until 2025.” The campaign will be funded by the SIHTA which is fighting to have an immediate cap on hackney licences until 2025. Also for any cap to be the subject of a legally binding contract between the council and each owner of a hackney taxi plate. A spokesman said: “We shall fund our own Peter May, of

MAY 2009

the Liberal

Democracy party, and have applied to the elec- tion office to register the name LiberalDemocracy. “We don’t think voters will be confused by the similar party name or the exact same name Peter May.”
