Bungling b urglars were caught after they booked a taxi to take them home from a raid, which turned out to be driven by a for- mer victim. According to the Leices- ter M ercury, Robe rt Brooks (28) and Neil Goode’s (27) c rime spree caug ht up wi th them when the taxi driver who came to pick them up recognised Brooks as the man who h ad bur- gled he r hom e a year earlier. In the b ack of the cab, the pai r - sti ll hi gh on heroin - j oked about their l atest raid and even offered to sell her a laptop computer. The court heard how on December 12, the pair called a taxi firm to pick them up from a hous e in Narborough R oad South, Leicester. The driver, a 36-year-old mother from Braunstone
Town, saw the pair com- ing towards the cab with bags, which she was told to put into the boot. She did not know what that they con tained items w orth more th an £1,000. When Brooks and Goode got into the back of the cab, they started em ptying o ut jewellery and money from a pa ir of ladie s’ handbags. The taxi driver said she was overcome with fear when she realised t hat she was being used as a getaway driver. The woman, who wanted to remain a nonymous, said: “I was so nervous. I said to them ‘You’ve not just burgled that house, have yo u?’ an d they started laughing. “I c alled the p olice as soon as I dropped them off. They are scumbags and we n eed to g et them off the streets.”

Brooks’ h ome minutes after he and Goode had been dropped off. The pair were arrested and taken to the police station, where they both tested positive fo r opium. Inspector Jon B rown, of Blaby p olice, s aid: “Booking a t axi t o g et away from the scene of a crime was quite a stu- pid t hing to do - i t’s certainly n ot the s tan- dard modus operandi. “House burglaries are a very personal crime and the taxi driver showed great co mmu- nity spirit to contact us as she did, allowing us to br ing these prolific thieves to justice.” Both pleaded guilty to burglary. Goode was sentenced to 3

months’ imprisonment while Brooks was given 20 months.

Three men from Liverpool were in the back of t he taxi and officers became suspicious of them. Fol- lowing a search, Clifton was found to h ave t wo mobile phones and about £860 in cash. He was arrested and taken to a police station, where a s trip search revealed a l arge ce llo-
phane package contain- ing crack cocaine had been hidden. Clifton pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of c lass A d rugs with intent to supply, at his first appearance before Magistrates. His barrister, Richard Thompson, said Clifton had been asked to bring the drugs to Hull to satisfy the debt he owed to Liverpool crim- inalsand said he was “at the lower end of the chain of command”.
