It is the sort of advertis- ing campaign which might have caused affront for being too raunchy back in the Fifties. But 46 years after
the miniskirt
became the defining fashion symbol of swinging London in the sixties, bare flesh on the side of taxis in Bath has been ruffling feathers at the Guildhall. The advertising cam- paign by a media agency, which features bikini-clad beauties and swimming-trunk- wearing hunks with rippling six-packs, was dubbed “inappropriate” and too risque for Georgian Bath by licensing officials. It’s certainly a far cry from the image the city

GUILDFORD COUNCIL MONITORS STOVE-TOP CAB
Council officers have admitted they are keep- ing tabs on a converted black cab emblazoned with company logos. The taxi, owned by Gomshall firm Wood- stock Stoves, has been turning heads since it hit Guildford’s roads six months ago. However, some resi- dents have
taken
offence to the appear- ance of the cab,which is complete with a lifesize model stove on its roof. They have complained to Guildford Borough Council about the vehi- cle being left in lay-bys and on roadsides. Council rules state that planning permission is
not needed for advertis- ing on vehicles as long as marketing is not the main use for the vehicle. A spokeswoman for the authority said the coun- cil had been aware of the taxi since being con- tacted by a member of the public in December. Woodstock

director Rupert Bottom- ley said the carwas only used for transport and business purposes. “Most people just think of it as a bit of fun but there are a few who’ve got nothing better to do,” he said. “We drive it around to sweep chimneys, fit stoves or carry out surveys. Most of the time it’s outside
my house in Albury but it had to stay in a lay-by there once for a while as it had a flat battery.” Mr Bottomley con- firmed that the council had written to him expressing concerns about the vehicle. “I wrote back asking them to advise me if I was doing anything ille- gal because obviously I don’t want to be,” he added. “They have not got back tome. It’s just as legal as any vehicle with adver- tising that is allowed to park anywhere.” Lea Pateman said she phoned the authority after the car was left in a lay-by outside her
home for a week last month. They informed her that
they were
already investigating the use of the taxi. Mr Bottomley said that the firm was planning to set up a ‘spot the cab’ website allowing the public to pinpoint where it had been seen. “We think it’s quite fun,” he said. “We drive down the road and people laugh at us. It brings a smile to peo- ple’s faces during all this doom and gloom.”

News: “The taxis are a novel way to promote the benefits of using real nappies. If enough peo- ple use them, it would mean a cut
in the
amount of waste being sent to landfill and help the environment.”

Adverts encouraging people to take a break in Littlehampton have been emblazoned on the sides of three black cabs. The six-month campaign is part of Littlehampton Town Council’s bid to attract more tourists to the area. Leaflets inside the cabs contain details of
Littlehampton’s
attractions and ways of booking a holiday there. Cllr Mark Butler said: “We are very committed to tourism and want to introduce initiatives that help increase the num- ber of visitors to the town, especially as reports suggest more peoplewill be holidaying in the UK this year.”
