HOWZAT!! SRI LANKATO BLUDGEON THEIR WAY TO WORLD CUP SUCCESS
The sub-continent is currently hosting the Cricket World Cup with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka acting as co hosts over the next month and the competition is presently at the group stage. With no major test nation unlikely to be eliminated be- fore the quarter finals there is still ample opportunity to put the dosh down and my dosh has already been placed on the brilliant but eccentric SRI LANKANS. THEY WERE AT THE START OF THE TOURNAMENT A BEST PRICED 9/2 with nu- merous firms, as you read this column it is unlikely you will get better than 7/2 but in a competition that is framed very well for the fancied teams I think this price is very generous espe- cially as their quarter final is to be played in the cauldron-like atmosphere of Colombo. My reading on the competition is as follows. Sri Lanka have a varied bowling attack with at least two match winners with the slingshot action of Malinga and the guile of Muralitharan. Added to the explosive Jayawardene and Sangakkarra and a top-notch batting line up that includes Dilshan they have all components covered in abundance. So where are the dangers? India apart (and I think they are also at a decent pre-tourna- ment price of 3/1) I can’t honestly see any. Australia are in tran- sition and are poor value at 11/2, England are seemingly knackered, Pakistan have too many batting collapses, South Africa tend to bottle it and the Windies are a shadow of their past. I have a sneaking feeling that Bangladesh will do better than the dismissive 40/1 odds bely but I can’t fancy them in the long haul. So back Sri Lanka to repeat their success of 1996. The Grand National and The 1000 and 2000 Guineas will be previewed in my April column. I know most of the value may have gone but there is no point tipping a horse for the National prior to Cheltenham.
CHELTENHAMANTE POST
This is the final column before Cheltenham begins in earnest on the 15th March so I think it only politic to put down my stak- ing plan prior to the meeting. My staking plan is in units rather than currency, it is for the reader to decide how much his unit is. Some of the information has already been given over the last two issues but the prices quoted below are currently available.
