LIVERPOOL TEENS TELL OF KIDNAP TERROR IN TAXI MIX-UP
Three terrified teen- agers were bundled into a hackney cab and threatened with a beating by furious taxi drivers.
Lewis Ball, 15, and brother Nicholas, 13, were walking home after school with friend Jay Callaway, 15, when a cabbie ran up behind them and punched Lewis in the head.
He shouted: “You’ve just ****ing bricked my taxi” before grab- bing the boy and frogmarching him through the Charlotte Pagsey Woods, near Saxon Way, Kirkby. The other boys fol- lowed, shouting at the driver, who then threw all three into the maroon hackney cab of a friend waiting on
the corner of Saxon Way and Washington Drive.
Diane Ball told the Liv- erpool Echo: “They just got off the bus and took their usual short cut through the woods on to the estate. They had not thrown a brick through anybody’s window, they were just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“They were hysterical in the taxi, with no idea where these men were taking them or what they had planned.” The boys’ shouts alert- ed a resident in Washington Drive, who came out as they escaped.
The maroon cab and a white hackney cab then sped away. Merseyside police
confirmed they are investigating the inci- dent which took place on on Tuesday 8 Feb- ruary and said no taxi drivers had reported vandalism to any of their cars. DI Natalie Perischine said: “This must have been an incredibly scary and upsetting situation for the boys. “We believe this was an unprovoked attack where they were wrongly identified and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. “We are now actively seeking the culprit and would appeal for any- one with information to contact us.”

SOUTHEND CABBIE COMPLAINS OF POLICE BRUTALITY
A cabbie was left with torn hand ligaments after being arrested by police.
According to the Southend Evening Echo, Roy Salter 69, claims police were too rough when arresting him for using a mobile phone while driving. Mr Salter said he was bent over the wall of St Mary’s Church, in Ben- fleet High Road, by officers. He was later taken to Southend Hos-
pital, where doctors found he had torn the ligaments in his hand. Mr Salter, from Can- vey, is using a splint and can only work for a few hours a day. The arrest happened after Mr Salter picked up a fare at Benfleet railway station, in Jan- uary. He was pulled over for using his phone. Mr Salter said he held up his hands to accept the penalty, but returned to his car
to call for another taxi to pick up his fare. Mr Salter said he believes officers then cuffed him, because they were worried he would drive off.
He has written to the professional stan- dards department of Essex Police, outlining his concerns. An Essex Police spokesman said: “A complaint has been received and this is being investigated.”
KNOWSLEY DAD TRIED TO SELL STOLEN FUEL TO CABBIES
A street cleaner stole thousands of pounds worth of diesel using his council issued fuel card a court heard. The Liverpool Echo reports that Matthew Knibb, who drove a street sweeper van for Knowsley Council, was charged with theft after an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public led the authority to undertake a surveillance opera- tion.
The 34-year-old dad of
one was observed fill- ing jerry cans with diesel and delivering them to an address in Huyton.
When he was arrested in July last year Knibb admitted to carrying out the four-month scam. Michael Cain, prose- cuting, said: “He would sell the fuel to people in the Kirkby area for half of the value; he approached PHVs to see if they wanted the fuel.” Magistrates heard that
council officers be- lieved the bill for diesel stolen between March 17 and July 31 to be £2,711. Toni Moran, defending, said her client was of previous good character and genuinely remorseful. Knibb was ordered to pay £700 compensa- tion to the council and complete 300 hours of community service. Mmmm...Just another unfortunate distraction for our guys and gals to be aware of - Ed.
