TERROR TIMES ELMBRIDGE DRIVERS IN DOUBLE ROBBERY

Taxi drivers are being warned to be on their guard after two cab- bies were robbed at knifepoint. A 27-year-old driver was threatened by two men after being called to a home in Bucking- ham Gardens, West Molesey, last month. When the cabbie arrived just after mid- night, the robbers demanded money and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The second robbery took place in Ferry Road, Thames Ditton, and also involved a knife.

DC Chris Ewan, who is leading the investiga- tion, told the Surrey Herald: “The robberies are both very serious

incidents, which we are linking.

“With the help of resi- dents I hope justice can be done for the taxi drivers who were just trying to earn a liv- ing.”

One of Elmbridge’s biggest taxi firms, Ash- ley Cars, in Hersham, says it will be getting police advice on how to train its drivers so they know what to do in a robbery situation. Two men in their 20s were arrested in con- nection with the robbery on January 12.

One man in his 20s was arrested in con- nection with the robbery on January 13, and has been released without charge.

The two suspects in

the first incident, in West Molesey, are described as white, between 18 and 20 years of age.

One was of skinny build and wearing a long, black hooded jacket with black jog- ging bottoms. The other man was wear- ing black clothing. The two suspects in the Thames Ditton incident are described as white, both aged in their early 20s, of medium build and with London accents. They were wearing dark clothing and hooded tops. One wore a brown and white striped scarf. Anyone with any infor- mation should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.

A taxi driver was stabbed in the back by a teenage passenger in a “deplorable” attack.

The 45-year-old man was attacked shortly before 7am on 25 Jan- uary after he picked up three teenage boys from Glasgow city centre.

They were picked up in Hope Street at 6.45am and the driver took them to Calfhill Road in the Pollok area of the city. Police said one of the passengers stabbed

him before leaving the private hire vehicle and the boys all ran off from the car without paying.

Detective Inspector Sam Carson told the Glasgow Evening Times: “Words fail to describe how deplor- able an attack this is. The taxi driver was out first thing in the morn- ing trying to make a living and to have been subjected to such a frightening ordeal is appalling.” The three suspects are described as white

males, aged 16 to 18. One was 6ft, slim build, light brown/ blonde spiked hair, wearing light coloured clothing. The second was 5ft 7in, chubby build, with Justin Bieber style dark hair, wearing a dark blue hoodie with zip at the front, while the third was a similar height, stocky build with dark short hair, with blonde streaks.

A taxi driver was stabbed three times during an attempted robbery in Coverdale Close, Heywood. The 32-year-old driver was waiting in his Toy- ota Hiace at 9.25pm on Sunday January 16 when he spotted a man in a nearby alleyway. After disappearing for a moment, the man suddenly got into the taxi via the passenger door and stabbed the victim in the arm three

The offender then attempted to steal the taximeter, but fled empty handed.

The victim also left the driver in fear of his safety.

PC Nadim Ahmad told the Heywood Advertis- er: “An unnecessary amount of violence was shown here. “The offender didn’t care about the conse- quences to the victim, and all he wanted was

the meter. “We are appealing for any witnesses, or any- one with information, to make contact with us.” Officers are trying to trace a white man, about 5ft 6in to 5ft 8in tall, of slim build wear- ing dark clothing and a balaclava.

A taxi driver was robbed of his takings by a gang of hoodies. Mike Kilcullen, 63, who works for Delta Taxis, was held down and had his night’s earnings taken after he picked up the four teenagers in Waterloo. The hoodies, who were dressed in black, had asked him to stop at Valley Close near Rimrose Valley Park, when one held him down while another pushed his face and stole the cash.

It was Mike’s last job of the day having worked since 2am and the thugs got away

with all his earnings. The gang fled across a field and laughed at him as they ran away with his money.

Mike told the Herald: “I felt humiliated. The hardest part for me was that if I had been 25 I would have run after them. When you’re 63 you can’t do that. They’ve picked on a vulnerable per- son who couldn’t chase after them.” By coming forward, Mike, who lives in Fazakerley, is hoping it might jog the memory of other drivers who might have been vic- tims.

He said: “Sometimes these things happen, where young people do a runner and peo- ple don’t report it.” A 16-year-old from Thornton was arrested on suspicion of rob- bery and has been released on police bail until April. Police are also scour- ing CCTV to find the other members of the gang, who struck at around 10am on Mon- day, December 13. Anyone with informa- tion is asked to call police on 0151 777 3634 or Crimestop- pers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
