Henry Glasgow presents the cheque to Gary Bonner for the McPherson Centre Appeal

Inverclyde Taxis have provided a real pick- me-up for organisers of a funding appeal in aid of a day centre. The generous compa- ny is putting its support behind a drive to pur- chase a £250,000 hydrotherapy pool for the McPherson Centre,

which does terrific work with local dis- abled people. And thanks to a donation from the taxi firm, the appeal is now £1,000 better off, to the delight of the committee in charge of collecting cash.

CabCard Services, the payment solution spe- cialists for the UK taxi industry, are delighted to sponsor “It’s on the Meter”, an expedition involving a team of 3 attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest taxi ride in history. Leigh Purnell, Johno Ellison and Paul Archer set off from London on Thursday 17th February from the London Transport Museum and will be travelling over four continents, thirty-nine countries, ten time zones and over 50,000 km finally arriving in Sydney approximately 8 months later.

The team bought the 18 year old LTI, 2.7 litre diesel Fairway cab on eBay for

£1500 and spent the following 2 years preparing her,

or

‘Hannah’ as she likes to be known for the journey ahead. The ‘Fairway’ is a classic London Black Cab so it is a fitting iconic image to accompany what will no doubt be a landmark in the his- tory of taxi journeys. Leigh Purnell from “It’s on the Meter” com- ments: “We are delighted that Cab- Card Services are on board with us and their much needed support will further enable us to reach our goal of raising £20,000 for The British Red Cross. This is the equivalent to what the meter will clock up in fares by the time we arrive in Sydney.”

John Tripaldella, a Fairway cab driver himself commented “If the boys even make Calais in that old Fairway then I will personally donate a substantial sum to the cause”. Well, John, you may have to come through on your promise because at the time of going to press the team had reached Berlin. Cab- Card were there at the launch to see the meter being turned on and to wave them off on the first leg of their journey. You can follow the progress of “It’s on the Meter” by visiting www.itsonthemeter.com or donating to their cause through http://www.justgiving. com/itsonthemeter

tary of the McPherson Centre Appeal com- mittee, told the Greenock Telegraph: “We are very grateful to Inverclyde Taxis for their generosity in supporting our appeal. “We have a couple of years of fundraising ahead if we are to achieve our target but outstanding donations of this nature increase our determination to succeed in the long run. This is a great gesture.”

Henry Glasgow, of

Inverclyde Taxis, added: “Inverclyde Taxis and our opera- tors are delighted to support this worth- while appeal, and wish the McPherson Centre Appeal Committee every success in rais- ing sufficient funds.”

AGE CONCERN BENEFITS FROM READING’S GENEROUS CABBIES

Age Concern Reading has received a boost to its funds thanks to a generous donation from the town’s cab- bies.

Representatives of Reading Taxi Associa- tion (RTA) handed over a cheque for £670 after about 200 drivers dug deep into their pockets. Reading Mayor Cllr Gul Khan selected Age Concern Reading as one of his charities for the year.

Cllr Khan joined Janet Brown, director of Age Concern Reading, to collect the cheque from the drivers out- side Reading station. Asif Rashid, chairman of the RTA, told ‘Get Reading’: “We raised the money over about five days just asking drivers on the taxi rank to donate.

“They were all very generous and we’re very grateful to them.” Cllr Khan added: “I

have been over- whelmed by the generosity of so many people during my time as mayor.

“The taxi drivers have been very kind, espe- cially during these tough economic times, and I’d like to say a big thank you to them.”

Council staff also raised more than £170 for Age Concern Reading in the run-up to Christmas.
